All About Pocket Knives

Or at least 2nd Cut Stag is how it was sold to me. Picked this up from my local knife guy today. 2nd Cut Stag or not, I'm very pleased with it.

Nice looking knife there. I believe it is actually "bone stag" and not second cut but a very nice knife.

they used second cut stag on some of the prototypes of that Bulldog design...

Thanks Willie. Tom says it's not 2nd cut and since I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, who am I to argue with him. (I know you were expecting this "but") - BUT - For the sake of discussion, I drug out the 45X yesterday and looked at handles, both bone and stag, until my eyes fell out. There are no veins in this handle material. Where they've been hafted (or maybe better said, where they have not been jigged and burnt?) the handles have a scaly look or maybe it's better described as a crackled look. Which ever way you describe it, it's like none of the bone handles I looked at. It is however, very much like the stag handles I looked at.

Im not a expert on stags... Some I like better than others... I found this explanation of 2nd cut stag here on this website posted back in 2007

"Second cut stag is where the inner part of the antler material is used. It is the plain material left over after the natural surface parts have been sawn off. Hence "second" cut (a seconds quality). Very often such knives will then have a milled jigged surface that tries to simulate the natural stag surface. Sometimes it is done well, and sometimes it fails to be convincing."

With that said Im sure someone could make a convincing "2nd cut stag" out of bone...

I have a lot of bone handled and stag handled knives... I like them both because they are different.. I also have a few knives listed as winterbottom that looks like second cut stag to me... Ill post a picture... In my collection I have wood handles, stag, second cut stag, mastodon, ivory, abalone, coral and now winterbottom ... I like them all....

Sounds like you are a knife generalist. That Winterbottom is not exclusive to but is associated with Queen.

Better than somethings Ive been called... I do like what I call the "old stag" handles like earlier Bulldogs... But I do like like knives with all handles as long as the design is one I like.

Stag bone looks much better after years of use and pocket wear. I have a Wharncliff whittler with stag bone but I've never carried it.
Some of, most of the second cut stag Parker used was not too convincing but?.?
