All About Pocket Knives

Question on Case XX 1st models. Most early XX knives are not marked
with a pattern number. I have three 1st model XX trappers they all have
pattern numbers. Is this the norm or all most 1st model 54's marked
with a pattern number?

I have a couple 1st models and they have pattern numbers also. It is my understanding that the XX trappers on the tested frames were the one's that did not have pattern numbers.

Is there some educational material relating to 1st model trappers, etc and how to recognize them?

Ray,
On the tested frame the handle material will be about 3 3/8" long, on the 1st model about 3 1/4"' and on the later model about 3 1/8". This is between the bolsters. I got this information from Robinetn and have found it to be accurate.
I am sure there are other ways and more information out there, just chiming in till someone more knowledgable comes along.

This is the way I been told to judge if they are 1st Model's

Ray, Yes there is reading material. I do know the frames, was curious
about the pattern #. Our own Gary Moore has a article KW Nov 2005
and Tony Foster KW Dec 1998. Both are excellent. Gary is one of the
most knowable Case people on the planet. They have some pictures.
Hope you have the articles. I was not saying others did not also have
knowledge. These articles was where I started to learn about the 54"s.

Hi Harold,
Thanks for the kind words!
Most XX era first model trappers do have pattern numbers, but not all. The only thing I can figure is that this may have been the frame that was in production when they started stamping pattern numbers on XX era knives.
