All About Pocket Knives

Hey all, I've had mine for only two weeks now, but I absolutely LOVE IT. It's the most impressive pocket knife I've ever seen personally - quality and finish/fit is just outstanding. The moment I received my Northfield #55 Houndstooth (after much fondling) it went right into my pocket and hasn't been out of my reach since that moment. I wipe it down and give it a thin coat of oil on the blade and any steel parts every other day or so, but it's already starting to take on some pepper spots along the back edge of the blade (the exposed area when folded and in the pocket). Eventually it will take on a natural full patina and have that sort of greyish-brown color to it. This Northfield will be a cherished life-long companion.

I use mine for opening the mail, packages, cutting string, etc. It's my constant companion and a beautiful work of the knife making art - I'm damned proud to own and carry it. It sounds like many here primarily collect them rather than carry them extensively, but for those who do let's see those well-used GEC's! Any interesting stories or experiences with them would be great too.

PS: also how do you carry it? In the pocket? A belt pouch? Include comments on routine maintenance (wipe it with oil or other product?).

Black Delrin "hayin helper" I use this everyday at work for cutting whatever, cutting open/breaking down cardboard boxes, cutting some rope, whatever I need to cut and not worry about it doing anything to the knife. This is one of my using knives, don't get me wrong I still have my collection/safe queens...

This #72 Lockback,I have been carrying for three years now __it has cut many miles of tape & cardboard****_but I keep it polished,cause I don't like ""PA-TINNY""

Here's an attempt at a better close-up of the blade. In just two weeks it's beginning to take on a greying from being in the pocket 24/7.

What do you polish it with? Also what do you do as a preventative? The typical wipe-down with an oily cloth now and then? Any particular products you use?

Carried/Used this #54 quite a bit over the last year. It's a real beast and still operates as well as the day I picked it up. Haven't put the flitz to it in a while but it'll Purdy right back up when ever I get around to it. I've put it to work cutting all kinds of stuff along with whittlin' .

If they would come out with this one with the clip and a pen in front i'd be in heaven

I use Mothers Polish to keep the blades & bolsters shiney--Ren-Wax, for preventive (handles & Blades)__ & oil the joints,with mineral oil_____wiping down,with an oily cloth (mineral oil) would work too !!!!

Interesting. You do your best to minimize patina. I help it along, at least on this knife. Just a little over one week old.

Looks good, whats the bone on that Barlow called ? dont remember seeing it ? how did you get the patina so quick ?

That variety is known as soup or marrow bone. Patina is the result of a dip in hot lemon tea. Didn't like the result as much as I thought I would, so I applied some cold blue.

i have only ever ,oiled them with any light oil ,and stropped them on a pc. of leather belt loaded with metal polish on one side(smooth side).....then on back,no polish(rougher side).....ALL STILL SCARY SHARP

I USE THE SNOT OUT OF MY KNIVES IMHO.......GEC MAKES THE BEST EDC ,TRAD. FOLDER OUT THERE IMO

The soup bone is stabilized with Acrylic. I dont think its an advertised GEC product, it's part of the TC Barlows SFO that aapk member upnorth commissioned. There may be a few more coming with sheep foot mains see

I LOVE that Barlow on the bottom!!!! That's the PERFECT Barlow - single spear point blade, dark wood scales, NICE!!

The Huckleberry Boys knife comes barehead or capped, in spear or clip, with our without a pen blade. Good luck in your search.

Here is my current EDC, I get a lot of use from this one GEC 48

My GEC edc's over the last few years . Mostly carry the 2 with lanyards at the moment.
