All About Pocket Knives

I saw this Remington Scout knife in an antique store today. It looked like it was brand spanking new. You can't see in my pics, but the 'Remington' etch on the main blade was perfect. This knife looked flawless to me.

Is what is written on the tag correct. Better yet- Is this knife worth that kind on money ($240)??

A pearl handled Remington Scout is pretty darned fancy...
Maybe made for the Scout Masters? It doesn't seem practical to me
Especially leading into the depression years.
It seems like there was a guy who had rehandled one with pearl and was selling it on ebay perhaps a year ago. Often when true to era bone can't be found they turn to stag or pearl.

Stewart & Ritchie list an R4234 pearl handled Scout knife on page 150 of their book. They have a book value of $500. Of course, that is for a mint example and is probably high as are almost all book values but does give a sense of relative values. I'm able to detect a ghost of an etch on this knife so it does appear to be in excellent condition. If you're a scout or Remington collector it might be worth it to you, assuming that you have the money to spare. I don't think I would buy it for a quick turn around.

By the way, the "4" at the end of the pattern number indicates pearl handles and that number SHOULD be stamped on the tang of the main blade.

Finally, in response to your question of its worth, conditon is the most important factor in value and there are quite a few things that you can't tell from pictures, especially partial pictures of one side of the knife. These factors really need to be evaluated with the knife in hand.

Does it actually have the pattern number stamped on the back tang? I know it is wrote on the card under the knife, But it would be easy to find the right blade with no pattern number stamped on it and install it in a knife. Then handle it in pearl, and tell people that's what the pattern number should be. A person could even take a blade with a incorrect pattern number stamped on it and shave the pattern number off. The pearl handles on that knife look brand new to me. Usually on a original pearl handle that old you will see a little bit of flaking of the pearl on the edges somewhere. I couldn't really see enough detail in the pictures to notice any. I would look at that knife VERY carefully before buying it. If its original, I think it would be a pretty good deal. JMO. Mark.

Now that's weird. The knife you posted from www.scoutknives.net was one of mine from my collection. I posted several scouts on that site. I have sold that particular one since then. It is real mother of pearl, not mother of toilet seat. Mark.

The knife appears correct, but I'd have to have a hands on inspection before I'd say that it was definately authentic. If in fact its original that is a bargain. I'd wager it would bring at least $100 more than the tagged price if it were to be sold on Ebay. Pearl handled scout knives are rare indeed.

Thanks for the input folks! I did take more pics of the knife and sent them to another board member here for inspection. All was in order - It really is a beauty

I could not add this to my own collection, But I was able to help that board member add this to his collection. When he gets it next week, Maybe he will be so kind as to post pics of it here for you to drool over.

Those other pictures helped. I may be off base here but I'm going to share my thoughts. I believe that blade etch is incorrect for that shield, the mark side of the main blade does not appear to have a true crocus polish under the etch. The pile side should be a blue glazed finish, as should the can opener.

I'm going to pic the rest of the pics- Hopefully these will help.

The etch side of the main blade is a polished finish, the opposite side has the crocus finish. There is a blue color on one side of the awl/reamer- the opposite side isn't coated.
