All About Pocket Knives

I just found this one at the flea market. It's in good shape all the way around other than wear on the main blade. Four line tang stamp. Is this WWII issue?

Steel pins. Steel liners. That shield. Yep

........mike, I think the "md-usn" shield is one of the rarest. mine is marked "usa", and I think it's the most common. all the ww2 ones had no brass in them. what's up with the bolster pin on the opposite end from the bail???-looks like it has a head on one side and recessed on the other-looks almost like that pin was replaced with a nail??????.................. ..........................

From my experience it is much harder to find one of these than the U.S.A. marked knives.

Someone here posted the total production numbers of these type knives during WWII, and as I recall the M.D. totals were much lower than the rest of them

Some of the very early models had brass, and other valuable war time metals like nickle silver, in fact my M.D. knife has N.S. pins in the steel bolsters, they used up what they could find for material as the government stopped their use of war time materials. So, you will find these utility knives with quite a mix of metals and many variations.

That is exactly what it looks like to me too, someone put a nail in there, I would have one of our knife mechanics put a steel pin back in.

You're right Tommy and Dimitri. It seemed strange but I didn't think of it as a nail stuck in there. I'd better get it re-pinned.

............mike, that looks like some of the old rogers bone on that knife, like mine, if it is, it's definitely worth repairing!!!......great find, buddy!!!!................... ..................

That is exactly what it looks like to me too, someone put a nail in there, I would have one of our knife mechanics put a steel pin back in.

..........miller, just pulled mine out of the display and looked to be sure.....it does have steel pins and liners....also have an electricians knife from the same era(primary 4 line stamped, same rogers bone), and it also has steel liners and pins.................. .................

Thank you Tommy! I've been doing pretty well at the flea markets this year. Picked up a 1944 U.S. Military Coleman lantern last week, looks like new, $15. $17 for the M.D. knife today. I also picked up a WWII machine gunners handbook that is way cool. I wait all week for Sunday to hit the flea markets.

I like the lanterns too.
I grew up without electricity. I did my school work by Coleman lantern or by kerosene lamp.
The Coleman lanterns were much better as they put out a lot more light!

I found they can be dated by a stamp on the bottom, not all are like this. I do believe I have a military one in olive drab paint.

Yes it's dated 1944. It says:

U.S.

How about this Jerry? Another flea market find, dated 1942. The guy thought it was a manual for machinists.

That's a hoot. I never thought there was much more to it than setting up your fields of fire, keeping it to short bursts and keeping the barrel cool enough it doesn't start cooking off rounds. Looks like there's more to being a grunt than just lugging that heavy S.O.B. around and hoping you stay alive.
