Pen blade harvest

HET !!
I like this REM split spring whittler so much
that i bought this $20 jack to harvest
the pen blade for replacement on the bone one.
Any cutlers out there know if this is possible,
or even worth the effort??? Jack has half stops.
Whitler do not. .

Get a micrometer and measure the tang of each blade. If they are within 2 or 3 thousandths of an inch of being the same you should be able to swap them. It may require filing down the square end of the donor blade to match the profile of the old blade tang. DON'T OVER FILE!
You can always take more off.....it is pretty difficult to add it back on.
The toughest thing to deal with is the width. Taking it down too much is hard without a machine shop.
If the donor blade is more than .005" thinner than the old blade, you are probably out of luck. It is pretty hard to make a tang thicker.
You may have to crink the new blade away from the master blade in the whittler, depending on how much bend (if any) is in the donor blade. Hopefully it will bend and not break. I would check and be sure there is not a lot of crink in either blade before starting. If either knife was a stockman, then I would think you would have problems. You may be OK with those two knives though.

Thank you Dave.
I am not trying to discourage you from trying it, just trying to tell you possible problems you could encounter.
It may very well work, as the pen blade in a jack should be straight, and there should not be much crink in the pen a split back spring whittler, maybe none, but I am not familiar with the Remington whittler pattern.
