these new knives are something to get excited about... well, besides the shatts, queens, canal streets, case, etc..... and oh yeah the old stuff! this addiction don't get better.

question...... were'nt the great easterns supposed to have pinned shields? or am i imagining that's what i read.

yes the shields are advertised as pinned, why would you think these are not.

hey getechman. well on my other three ge knives i can see the indention and finished shield pin. on my stag 73, it's either finished to be invisable(very possible) or it's not there. the shield is so proud i can see under it at one end and it feels like it would hang in the pocket. i'm not trying to be hard on this knife, it is very satisfactory in all other aspects. i just have high expectations. this is the fourth ge i've purchased.

The shield pin is welded on to the shield before being assembled. Believe me it is there. The indentation you see on the others Would be from the welding process. There is actualy a small explosion in this process, it is welded without any shielding gas, the explosion drives the oxygen away allowing the fusion of the pin and shield.
Being that stag is not a machined or smooth surface you sometimes get a proud look on the shield. Sometimes jigged bone has the same look. It would not look good recessed too deep in the handle material either. It is that happy medium that is desired. I hope your knife is in that range.

next, i was speaking about a pin showing on the inner frame. is it only pinned to the thick, gnarily, great stag handle? unless it's missunderstood, i love the handles. proud is proud - i'll live with it. i'm not gonna edc this one. this ain't my first rodeo so ignore my opinion or look into it. quality control ? i look forward to ya'lls next pattern.

In my opinion they are certainly pinned. Because some sheilds do stand up proud like that, I would find it real hard to believe that the shield could withstand the buffer. I believe a glued shield would be ripped off by the buffing wheel.
I believe that GEC is moving in all the correct directions, that they are doing the right things in order to be a sucess.
I heard that they hired some experienced finishers and that is really going to help down the line. A couple of experienced finishers can help train the rest of the crew and improve quality standards/expectations. The quality has been improving (greatly) since I recieved and sent back the first 2 knives I ordered.
I think we collectors will be the real winners in the long run as GEC seems to be quickly taking action where needed. I do know that with this first run Canal Street Cutlery has to be watching very carefully. There is room for both, but there is certainly a chance for business competition between CSC and GEC. Collectors do stand to win, get knives that they desire, say like that CSC D2 trapper I just picked up through Bryan.

Things could get REAL interesting in the near future, think of the possibilities.

Just a thought, but a 3 3/4 or 3 7/8 trapper with a Warncliffe and Clip blade has been done by Tony Bose. I do believe that to be better than a spey. I belive it's in this month's Knife World, where Jim Parker took credit or credit was given to him in an article some years ago for Tony's work. Came out in the end.

The great thing so far is neither CSC or GEC is stepping on the other's toes as far as patterns go.
