All About Pocket Knives

I recently added a Ka-Bar 1232 USA to my collection of fixed blade knives. I had had one like it when I was a kid but of course who knows what happened to it so I bought another. This one is in mint condition and has the italicized Ka-Bar tang stamp. My question is what type of steel was used on these? I think this one may be from the mid 70's and it is a booger to get an edge on it. It was completely dull (don't know if these didn't come with a decent edge when new) and not usable until I can get a good edge on it. Any info on the blade would be appreciated.... Tony

Hi. There is 440 stainless steel that is harder to sharpen than 420 production grade type. This holds the newly sharpened edge long even if used often. Yes, it can be a trick to sharpen. For that a small yellow sharpener (http://www.kleintools.com) by Klein Tools is fine and affordable. Keep the fingers tucked away from edge and behind the guard. Only a few pulls make it sharp.
