How KA-BAR Got Its Name

Soon after its introduction in the mid-1920's, the KA-BAR trademark became widely known and respected. There have been many versions of how the KA-BAR name came to be, but all evidence points to a letter received from a fur trapper. This particular fur trapper's testimonial turned out to be the most significant ever received by the company.

He wrote, in very rough English, that his gun had jammed and that he had therefore relied on his knife to kill a wounded bear that was attacking him. In thanking the company for their quality product the trapper described using his knife to kill the bear. All that was legible of his scrawled writing was "k a bar". The company was so honored by this testimonial that they adopted this phrase and used it as their trademark, KA-BAR.

Here's a picture of a KA-BAR stamped knife. It's only the second Harness Jack of hundreds I've seen, that has a sheepfoot blade! Maybe some knowledgeable students of Ka-Bars would comment?? PA??

Speaking of taking a bear with a knife, my neighbor holds the Montana state record for killing a black bear with a knife. 2 brothers actually the Robison's back in the `60's. The were a pretty wild bunch.

When I visited the Ka-Bar organization last fall, I was shown the original painting used for this sales pitch. I asked to see the fur trapper letter, they laughed. The ties between CASE and kaBar are deep and the real story reveals that struggle. A real continuation of Brad Lockwoods, CASE Dynasty book. Brad was very helpful in completing my project. It should be a great read for those that enjoy the history of cutlery companies.

I am not for sure how they got their name, but I am fond of Ka-Bar knives. Here is a few of my Fav's

I have around 20 different knives by the Company including my favorite pattern the Saddlehorns which I have shown on a previous post. Also I was lucky enough to have the winning bid on eBay last week for the one I was missing I now have all four issues!!

I will post a picture as soon as it arrives.

I appreciate all of the comments on the Ka-Bar's. There are some really special Ka-Bar club knives out there, and you get a lot of knife for the money. I would highly recommend looking around to see if you can find one to fit in your collection.

Unfortunately Singin 46, I do not intend on parting with any of these here.

hey ya old buzzard, i like em a lot and look for ones that catch my eye. yours are real nice. my stag canoe is made by queen and very high quality, the congress, i don't know for sure. it's not the knife the canoe is. but it looks good with the other members of my congress.

I ran to the post office today, looking for my prize. (Live too far up in the mountains to get US mail delivery)

The Ka-Bar I have been lusting to find arrived and I thought I would show a couple of pictures.

Ka-Bar issued four different versions from 2001 thru 2004 as Club Knives. This is the 2003 version and I am now lucky enough to have all four issues in my Saddlehorn collection.

This is not road kill that's for sure... But like you said you ran down to the post office today. I am sure you walked up home too. Perhaps even had to stop at a tree on the way home because you were soooo excited. Very happy for you.
