All About Pocket Knives

Not being a Remington guy I wanted to pick some brains before putting this on the website. Very nice F/F, pinned on shield, composite end (on lockbar end). Blade marked very well. Nice stag. When was it made? What is a fair value?

It looks like a 1993 R1176 . If so , they made 5,000 of them and the book price is $150 with box and papers . However, most Remington year knives seem to be bringing about 1/2 of book price at this time .

It's stag and an R1306 and I expect made by Bowen in late 70's - early 80's. Not the Camillus made stuff.

Camillus made? The stagalonish looking knife I was referring to was the one I linked.It's Night and day between the real stag and the stagalon'ique stuff huh (just made that up) ? I didn't even know that the date stamped Rems were even in "the books" but I guess they have to keep on writing the books eh?

It's easier to "tell on sight" when both sides are pictured . Also when you know the length of the knife . I cannot tell you when the knife was made , but it was made by ALCAS of Olean , N.Y. as is stamped on the reverse side of the tang .

OK, let me start over to avoid further confusion.

The Remington Stag R1306 pictured is marked "Remington UMC, Made in USA" on the front tang and only "R1306" on the rear. It is 4 5/8" and the shield is pinned. I have pictured an Alcas and Bowen as well that I expect were made around the same time by Bowen. The Bowen is also only marked "R1306" on the reverse. The Alcas is marked only "A02 USA" on the reverse.

Does anybody know for sure when this Remington knife was made and by who? Has anybody seen same Remington variant sold or for sale elsewhere?

Looks like this auction answers some of the questions; but can anyone verify if mine is a Bowen produced model?

IM, do you read that to say that Bowen just sub-contracted their work out and didn't actually build anything themselves?

There were other sites with info and it seems that Bowen did manufacture bullets starting in 1970.
By 1977 or so (cant find link again) they were having knives built by others as well, Alcas being one of the companies.
My closest guess based on the information I have read is that your knife is an Alcas produced knife from 1977-79.

Being somewhat of a fan* of this pattern, I've followed these for a while. Folks have claimed that those marked like the Bowens ("R1306" on the pile side) but NOT marked Bowen were made by Alcas at the same time as the Bowen production. If this is correct, it would put it, as IMBand has suggested, roughly during the 1977-1979 period.

Now for prices. The ones I've seen marked like the knife Knifeswapper originally posted, AND with a yellow-metal pin for the backspring, have gone from a low of $60 (used, some scratches from sharpening) to $195 (new, with receipt, but no box). I've seen one knife with similar markings but white-metal pins, but the seller withdrew it before the auction was complete. Over the same period, Bowen-marked knives have gone from a low of $70 (used, dirty, lousy pics) to $265 (NIB, with original receipt, same bidder bought another Bowen bullet knife from the same seller at the same time).

Keep in mind though, that I stopped tracking these in August of 2012; my notes on sale prices are not current. And I have no idea if the pin color has any signficance. During the time I was keeping notes on these, it seemed that all of the Bowen-marked knives had white metal pins.
