All About Pocket Knives

I have one just like it except it is an I-XL George Wostenholm. c. 1960. Goins Encyclopedia lists T. Ellin & Co. as being in business c. 1784-1970 and the VULCAN trade-make starting in 1846. The lack of the country of origin may mean that the knife was not made for export to the U.S. Price and Zalesky say the Vulcan trade-mark was used from 1886-1944 So there ya go, right back where we started!!

The spare parts market after the knife companies closed resulted in a great many bastard parts knives. I could have bought a few of those Tyne scales a few months back from a guy with a whole chest full of scales, springs, blades ect from various companies.

I agree they are rare and hard to find. The parts knives are just as good as all the others since they were mostly made by out of work cutlers trying to earn a living. They were never made to defraud just as tools to be sold and used.

Here's a Vulcan T. Ellin & Co. Sheffield that I recently picked up. Nice little pen knife, great snap on both blades, and no play on the blades. cheers

To all of you out there reading this post and especially to the two posters who showed their knives:

If you have a knife that has two blades at opposite ends of the knife working off a single backspring I would implore you NOT to open both blades to the half open position at once unless you would like a knife with a broken backspring.This action puts a tremendous strain on the spring and will snap it in a heartbeat.The only way you can safely do this is if the blades both have half stops.
I just had a Case 5488 repaired due to a broken backspring that a prior owner had obviously done this operation.
Just my opinion folks.
