There was a large fire at Camillus today. Many of the original 100+ year old buildings were destroyed by a fast spreading fire. I will take some photos tomorrow and post them here on AAPK.

Construction workers that were preparing the building for demolition ignited the fire with a torch. They attempted to stop the fire with a fire extinguisher but were unsuccessful. The local fire departments were there all day fighting the fast spreading fire.

I bet the old buildings were mostly wood, and probably a lot of the wood floors had oil soaked into them, if it was like some of the old wood frame machine shops I have been in.
That is really a shame! Even though they were getting ready to demolish them, it is still a shame they burned up!

Sad Day indeed. I live about a block and a half from what was the Camillus Cutlery Factory. I do realize she was scheduled for demolition but it was hard to see her go down in flames. I've lived in Camillus all my life and will hold the memory that we once made some of the best knives in the world.

So sad to lose that part of our great Cutlery History-The great Knives that were made there will carry on its legacy. Seems odd that it burned just when it was scheduled for demo. Things happen like that some times. Wish I could have seen the old factory. Thanks for letting us know.

Maybe she desided to go out on her own terms, with dignity.

It is a terrible shame, so much of our history (of all types) goes up in flames. There was a huge tobacco processing plant here, at one time the largest business in the town, that was to be partially preserved - until it all burned down a few years ago. Once gone these structures only survive in pictures and memory; a real shame about the Camillus plant. OH
