All About Pocket Knives

I'm not really a case collector but I just got this one the other day and I'm having trouble identifying it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

looks like a 6231 1/2. very nice old knife.

My literature says this stamp indicates that this knife was made in the pre 1920. It looks really good for that era. Could someone more knowledgable date this knife? Just curious.

Hate to rain on your parade but that is an awful fake. Looks like it was made out of an authentic but later Case 6231-1/2, probably 70's era.

What about the knife is fake? The blades or the frame? The knife doesn't look like it has been taken apart. I don't think there is a parade to rain on, I think everyone is just looking to see what is right or wrong with the knife. THe scales look old but the blades sure look good for a knife of that era. Has the tang stamp been altered or were there fakes made? It seems these older, or older stamped, case knives always bring questions.

Again, not being argumentive at all, if the knife is fake then it is, but what makes it a fake? Is it a complete fake made later or one that has been altered? If it has been altered then what has been altered? Thanks for all of your help. B-R and Knifeaholic, just trying to learn more so as not to be taken or to not represent a fake as a real one at at a later date.

Tom, the tang stamp doesn't look right to me. I'll dig out a real one, or two, and post pictures unless someone else does first.

This particular stamp usually is followed by Bradford, PA, at least in my limited experience. Does this stamp occur without the Bradford, PA?

I looked through Sargent's and was unable to find this particular knife. I found a 6231 1/2 (in this era) with winterbottom handles ... but I was unable to find this knife with the handles shown.

Not to say that Sargent's is exhaustive ... just that I couldn't find this exact knife. Anyone else?

The WR CASE & SONS tang stamp is followed by Bradford, PA. Like I said I'm not an experienced case collector but the knife looks very old. The bone handles look much older than many handles I have seen on newer case knives. Also the blades look much older in person than in the pictures I posted. Maybe it's just wishful thinking but it looks like it could be that old.

Does the Bradford Pa. on the tang change anyone's opinion as far as it being fake?

No...there are several other things that stand out on the knife without looking at the tang stamp.

Hi Tom, IMHO this knife is not from the WR era, period. A fake stamp and shield have been added to a newer knife.

I introduced MKMKNIFE to the site so I know he is just trying to learn as am I about Case Knives. He , like myself, has some knowledge of Bulldogs. It would be great if someone could post a knife from the WR era so we could have a comparison.

I have one 31 1/2 pattern from the Case Bros. Little Valley period, and one from the early tested era. I don't have one with a WR stamp, maybe someone else will see this and post one.
