All About Pocket Knives

We've had several threads dedicated to the Camillus 72, but I don't remember one dedicated specifically to the Schrade 863 and it's Ulster, Craftsman, Powr Kraft, etc variations.

Here's mine.....the one on the left is a EDC.....the one on the far right is an Ulster 63. Next to it is my only Walden 863. The rest are Schrade U.S.A. On the bottom are three "new in the tube", and a Herman Williams in stag.

Schrade ended production of the 863 in 1980.

Post your pics of this "almost perfect" pocket knife.

I have a Schrade 863 and two Ulster 63. I have purchased a Craftsmanand waiting for it to turn up in the mail.

Mike and Grant, those are some mighty fine 863s & 63s.

Let's start off with an old Imperial Scout, '46-'56 tang stamp but I'm willing to bet the knife is early '50s

How about this Schrade 863, factory fresh in the tube. (Thank you Squirrel) Britannica Squirrel also sent a used Schrade 863 that I EDC. It's wonderful.


This Craftsman 9494 is sweet. It's made by Ulster.

I found this Ulster 63 with orangish handles. Not as cool as the one T.J. sent but still a nice variation.

I just keep feeling like there's one or two more but right now I'm on a trip down Knob Creek and not tracking all that well.

It may not be difficult to figure out but I do dearly love this pattern. Someone else said it's, "the biggest little knife you'll ever carry."

Nice ones, guys. I am going to have to hunt me down one of those Craftsmen knives.

knifeaholic suggested I post this Hammer Brand in this thread. I had posted originally in another thread, concerning it's authenticity:

I say the knife was made by by Imperial as you can see the pins in the bolster.There is a picture of an Imperial scout by Jerry 6818 which shows the pins .

Someone in the Schrade family anyway. Imperial/Ulster/Schrade. Notice the plain pull on the main blade, handle pin spacing vs the bolsters, small clip blade profile. It's not Camillus.

I've never seen one with the Hammer tang stamp - very interesting, Jerry.

Yes that one counts. Schrade made a lot of knives for Craftsman.Yours was made around 1973 or before . They changed the tang stamp from Schrade Walden to Schrade after 1973.

It's an interesting pattern. I have another one somewhere, but I think it says Schrade, not Schrade Walden.

And it doesn't have the Craftsman Etch.

If you go to the Camillus forum and look up 72 you will see a lot of knives with the same design.

Made for Sears 1946-1973. Since Schrade didn't start making that pattern until the early '50s, with those black composite material handles, yours was probably made in the '50s or very early '60s. Very nice example.

Who has Schrade catalogs from the 1950s? Anyone know what Schrade called that pattern (during that period, Camillus called it "Carpenter's and Whittler's Knife")

One of the cool things about those black comp handles is that it's a very deep, diagonal "peach seed" jigging. Maybe it's molded in, I don't know. It's different than almost every other "black comp" I've ever seen. Since the jigging has "bite" to it, sharp edges, I have to think it's really machine jigged.

Took me a long time to be able to read that etch.

Thanks! That's a newer catalog than I have. I've got the reprint of the old one. I didn't even know this knife was a "Kon-Kav". I guess when they made it for Sears, they called it "Hollow Ground". Probably a copyright/patent thing.

None of the knives on this thread show that "Kon-Kav" etch.

Since this is such a great pattern, here's an Empire, which is on Ebay right now.

If it was in better shape, I'd go for it. A real classic "carpenter" pattern.

Dragunski you have put the cat among the pigeons.The Camillus 72 collectors will be fighting to get that one.It looks a nice old knife and might be one of the earliest of that pattern made.

I think you are right Grant about it being early.
The earliest version of that pattern I have seen.
Nice bone handles too!

It will probably top $75, maybe even $100.
I don't collect Empires, so I don't follow their prices. I know some are quite costly.

Gee thanks Dragunski. I've been watching that one and hoping it would fly under the radar. Looks like the potential price just went up.



Edit: Dale -- If your predictions hold true and it goes for that kind of money, it won't be coming to live in Rockford, IL.

But it is so purty, it has to cost more right?

The only reason I did not notice it before is that they had swell center as one word( swellcenter ).
