All About Pocket Knives

Although I have somewhere between 80 and 100 pocket knives, I know very little about knives, other than what I have learned since I stumbled upon AAPK last week, and being one who doesn't like to trow away anything, I have several junk knives. I am looking for opinions on two knives I have. Are they worth restoring or should they just be trashed.
If they are worth restoring, got any idea who does knife repairs? One is a Winchester 3860 (I think that's what it says) has worn blade and a Remington R100A,has missing handle and worn blade. Thanks, Allan

we have a forum to let us know some thing about your self.

Now to help you out IMO. First if the knife you are looking at (was it a gift from some one you want to remember) if that's a YES the it is WORTH it.
Then I would look at the steel if its good steel then Yes fix it. Give her a face lift. She then will make a good every day user.(EDU)
Any good working knife is worth some thing.
If you are just asking to make lots of money then no. They have to be a collectibles as is. If you fix a collectibles it might lose VALUE.
If you just want to know how much the knife is worth? Then watch E-Bay for what they are selling for(one just like yours).

hey allen welcome. now as to your junk knives, they don't appear to be junk, just used. any value they hold will be preserved by cleaning any active rust and gunk out and preserving with light oil and or other products designed prevent rust. they can be cleaned further if you so desire. it's up to you.

I'm with SK on this one, leave them as they are. I love a fine old knife that I know was used but not abused. You will be surprised as to the value they have as is. Everyone wants a mint knife, but they aren't always available. Look at the article I wrote on "MINT Verses Everything Else" on this forum and you will see what I mean.

Thanks guys for your opinions. Some of the knives I have belonged to my grandfather (died in 64), but the sad part is I don't remember if these two were his or not. None of my knives has any real high collector value and I will never sell them. I just like knives and will pass them on to my son and grandkids. I'm glad I found AAPK, it has renewed my interest in pocket kinves and yall have taugh me a lot.

You don't specify what is wrong with the knives, except that worn blades & a missing handle.

I would not recommend replacing the blades, but they can be re-profiled if they have a broken tip, or are messed up from some other cause. If some one has put it on a grinder, usually those marks can be taken out if it isn't too bad.

If a blade is broken off, so short to reshape, they can usually be removed from the knife, leaving the good blades. This depends on the pattern and how the knife is put together.

The handles can be replaced, though they most likely won't match the original bone or stag. I usually try to find material close to the original handles.

There are several of us here who do that type of work: Myself (orvet), Kaleb (Muskrat Man), and Jeff (agteacher2), and probably others as well. Send any, or all of us, a PM and discuss it with us. Pictures of the knives in question, especially of the damage, would be helpful.

Thanks for your reply. One blade on each knife had been broken and re-shaped to the point that it sticks up above the handle. I will pm you to discuss getting them repaired. Thanks, Allan

I agree with pa and sk but if you want to repair try to find the right blades. This might be almost impossible to do.
