Hand Dying Bone

Just a note to you fellows out there, culpepper sells jigged bone in undyed form. I bought some catalina and hand dyed it with potassium permanganate since they don't sell a good brown. Looks like nice vintage bone. It would look very similar to the tan WWII era bone if I had went a little easier on the PP

That looks really nice!
How did you do the dying, just let it soak, or boil the bone in the potassium permanganate solution?
How much potassium permanganate in how much water?
How deep did the dye go into the bone?
I have used potassium permanganate before but it didn't go real deep.
I had been hoping for better penetration than I got with it.

It doesn't go very deep. I finish the handles down, dampen it, sprinkle on a thin layer of the powder and dab on water until it's a thick slurry, let it dry out and dab on more water until it's a slurry again. Do that 6-8 times to get this color. Without vacuum systems it's hard to get the same penetration that you get on factory bone.
