Cato, do you know what the amp rating is?
With a belt turning that slow - it will naturally be more aggressive. If the amp draw is low (3 amps or less)
there is a good chance it will be easily stalled out with normal pressure against it.
Of course this is depending on the way it is geared. A gear reduction set-up will work better than a direct drive
in this case.

What size is it? (belt dimensions)

I DON'T own one so I can't tell anything from experience but I am familiar with gear reduction/overdrive, torque, and amps.

I have not heard anything bad about the Kalamazoo 1 x 42 sanders.
As far as being under powered goes, I have not heard of that being a problem either for any 1 x 30 or 1 x 42 sanders.

My 1 x 42 is a older Delta (8-10 years) with a cast iron frame.
It is real solid and has a 1/3 hp 1730 RPM motor (motor made in China of course).
I have NEVER come close to stalling the motor even when using the 9" disk sander built on the frame.

I would think that slower is better, from a sanding perspective.
How much they asking for it?

Dale -- Is your Delta 1x42 sander anything like my Delta SA-180 1x42 ? There's an 8" disk on the right hand side, you can't see in the picture. That's my second one and I was lucky to get it because Delta discontinued it about seven or eight years ago.

That's it Jerry. I guess it is an 8" instead of a 9" disk. I just bought a new 100 grit disk a couple days ago, but I bought it by sight (Yeah, that is about the right size) & didn't pay attention to the number, but I thought they had the new disks labeled as 9".

I got mine just shortly before they discontinued them.

i been looking found a old three phase gear drive sander 2 or 3 x 42
old G.E motor think they called them sand grinders but not set up for
3 ph.

That's cheaper than the Jets that look like my Delta. They want $500 for them.

My 2" x 42" belt sander is a Grizzly and it works very well.
I have had if for about 5 years and never had a problem.

I bought a Jet 1 hp buffer shortly before I bought my Grizzly 2 x 42.
While I have not had a single problem with the Grizzly, Jet had to replace the buffer 4 or 5 times.
It happened so frequently I finally figured out that it was the switch. When it went out for the 5th or 6th time, I replaced the switch myself. I got tired of being without my buffer for 2 weeks every time the switch went out.

If I ever have to replace my Delta 1 x 42, I will be looking to Grizzly for the replacement.

What would be a better grinder? I have been looking for one, even a used one for some time but as I don't do many knives at this time need something more economical.

i have been looking at lot of different items, have a easisharp, that has gear reducer to a diamond steel wheel and a 2 inch sanding wheel strait of motor end
i think could be made over to larger belt length, just trying to set -up shop, and

i dont want the heaviest equipment, nor lightest trying to get in middle of the road

well i dont know, but im a paint contractor and have always tried to get in the middle, with my equipment. somthing that can take every day use with light to moderate materials use easy and will also step up to heavier material if needed at times.

but would not handle the heavier stuff in everyday use but can occasionally

The guy at the flea market wouldnt take $30 for the Kalamazoo he had(almost new too!)so I wound up paying $35,the bitch was I had to carry it about a half a mile to the car..
