All About Pocket Knives

Hey folks,

As most of you know my jack of all knves is my Lumber jack. In the momnent being a bit lazy I used her for another punishing task. Today I was doing some fall maint., and cleanup. It was time to put those fertilizer spikes in for my trees. These things are typically 6" long or so. They come with a plastic cap that one places over the top of the spike and you beat it into the ground with a mallet or hammer what ever works best. My ground is so hard when I beat on it the dog gone thing breaks in two. So Some of you may want to close your eyes , I pulled out the lumberjack fron my front pocket, wipped out the heafty spear blade and used it as a drill. I just forced it into the ground and spun it back and forth until I was my 6" deep. I was really suprized it worked well.

After I was all done I felt really bad and took the time to wash her off in the kitchen sink and give her a nice cold WD40 bath. She is sleeping quietly in the garage now.

So the moral of the story is: If you treat her badly, its only fair to make it up to her...... Bonehead

Gotta be solid after that! I would say that's a true test of the knife's strength.

I used to use a pick to make a hole for the fertilizer spikes. Your ground must be pretty soft if you can push a knife in by hand.

I wouldn't try that here in the red georgia clay. I've had new shovel and mattock handles break in this stuff. You may very well have the same clay in your part of SC

It does say alot about the tuffness of a GEC

Not something I've had to do but good to know it stands up to those sorts of tasks

Oh... the humanity!!! LOL!! Seriously though, sometimes I forget that knives are made to be used, most of them anyway. I got a Roughneck thats built like a TANK! I'm not suprised that it held up and it prolly didnt even break a sweat!

Its just interesting what some will do with a knife. This morning I did not even set out to use it. That said, I had to use it to cut some twine on some newly planted trees which left it in my pocket. Yes Cutty, the clay is much the same, Super hard Clay, the two new Trees I planted today came from GA.

All said to use folding knife for this as I did is downright stupid. Yes, I am stupid. However, other than the smarter soution in a fixed blade, this USA knife proves it sturdiness as a folder not necessarily meant for this kind of use. I Think it says something for a heavty duty knife today ......

PS: Iron Hoarder, I Do not Know how hard the dirt is there, but it is pretty hard here, maybe you would be suprized. Perhaps, I should have used the word forced rather than pushed, But the message was its a Nice to have a folder with this drilling capability.

Yes, This is not something that many would do in today's day and age. But Perhaps, Back in the day, the common folk used the larger pocket knife , as this, in the day perhaps the toenail/Sunfish pattern for just about anything that was present, Oh, And I can bet much worse than I used it for today.

If there is a Folder produced today that can take this knife of abuse, please let me know, I need one for sure...... Bonehead
