All About Pocket Knives

A couple of days ago I posted my Case peanut in the EDC thread, as I had a wedding that night, so I wear a suit or slacks and those Case peanuts, at 2 7/8 inches, just disappear in the slacks, leaving you a decent yet discreet knife. Well fast forward a couple of days, and I've still got that little jack knife in my pocket. Inbetween, I've used it to cut down my garden (which froze) and to cut a lot of sissal rope from around my tomato cages. Add a bunch of boxes today and t shirts, and its got a pretty good workout. I'm impressed with this little thing, that clip blade can make some serious cuts. Especially for sucha thim profile blade! Mine will need a fast touch up on steel tonight, but it's still sharp enough to make the rest of the day. anyways, thought I'd post a favorable review of the knife. Any other peanut fans here? I'd just about stopped carrying them, but will have to rethink that!

Yes, a peanut in the pocket is a good thing.

I agree TAB, the Peanut is a solid knife for certain! Here's my two Case Peanuts, the brown one is a '73 and the yellow is a '72. Ol' Yeller sees quite a bit of pocket time nowadays, she like to ride down deep in the right front pocket to satisfy my need for a slippie while carrying a one hand opener clipped to the pocket. Also make a good solo knife for occasions when a bigger knife might not be appropriate. I carried mine most recently to a funeral, and used it to open up snack packages and juice boxes for the kids in the "family room" area. Wouldn't have felt right to break out a big Kershaw in that situation, but the peanut fit the bill perfectly...

Those are some fine looking knives gentlemen.

Interesting timing (for me) on this post ...

A week ago I bought my very first peanut. I had mostly overlooked or dismissed them as being "too small", and opted for whittlers (a passion) or stockman pattern instead.

One day I spotted a pretty Collector's Club "worn" green bone peanut online, I liked the look and the shield a lot, but dismissed it as usual, and moved on. Next day I'm in a retail chain store, and there's a Case display, and there were a few peanuts in there and they somehow didn't look so tiny, in fact they looked like a good watch-pocket size ... so I went home and ordered that little green guy, and it is a sweet little knife!

Hasn't left my pocket since ... (no pics yet, but will post one soon) ... so, I finally "found a peanut", and I like it!

Won't be my last, I'll wager.

Actually the peanut was my first 'real' pocketknife, my dad gave me one in 1991, a little Case. Before that was boy scout pocket knives or hunting knives on my belt. After that Case in 91, I was always with a pocketfolder. They're substanial little fellas. I'd put mine up, gone to whittlers and congresses, a few stockmens, and some barlows. Now I have to get them back out.

I must confess. I too have always dismissed the peanut. To my knowledge I've never packed one. I may have to rethink that.

Here is my only Case Peanut, a standard Delrin working version made in 1990.

If you're serious about that and don't own one, I'll send you one to try out for a year (Really). I'd send one to everyone if I could, but if the Colonel has never tried one, he owes it to himself to carry one for a while (no strings--just PM me). The Peanut has been continiously produced by Case since they opened their doors and was probably a pattern used by "Case Bros." before them. Ya gotta figure there's a good reason for that. I carried either a Peanut or Tadpole for my "back-up" knife for years. They're as handy as a pocket on a shirt!

On Edge, I'm a big Whittler fan too. It's good to hear of another one on board.

Elvis, I am honored and mighty tempted. If it wasn't for fear of losing or otherwise messing up your knife I'd take you up on that. That said I noticed a neat little Camillus peanut in the aapk stores the other day and just about bought it.

I would have bought it too if it weren't for being on a 72 pattern quest right now.

But I do appreciate it and am mighty honored.

Glad to see the peanut love. They don't fit my hand. At all. Mine went to my kid as soon as he got old enough to open it safely. For me though, I almost felt like I need a pair of needle nose pliers to get a grip on the thing.

Difference is what make this stuff so fun though. Rage on.

The best thing about Case peanuts is that someone will always trade for them! I can't say much good about any of the sub-3.25" knives, I'm not sure carrying one is much better than no knife at all.

And yes, at various times and for various reasons, I have carried and used one for tasks far beyond their intended use. I've field-dressed and skinned deer with one, and once on a bet I skinned a steer with one. That doesn't mean they are something I'd ever want to carry on a regular basis.

Fortunately, I don't have to--someone will always trade for them, knowing how useful they are, and we can both walk away happy!

I always thought their size was a little on the small side but did happen to pick up a few recently. Some guys won't carry any other knife, they do seem to be a good "Sunday go to meetin'" knife. The 2 yellow comp knives are a stainless at the top and a Chrome Vanadium on the bottom. The middle stag is part of a 2 dot Red Letter stag set from 1978.



The second picture has 2 that I won recently at auction, below a Case -99 pattern Navy knife. The top one appears to be stag, not sure about the bottom one or the year they were made. I expect them to be relatively new since they have bails. For scale, the -99 is 4 1/8" according to my reference books. I'm starting to warm up to this pattern.

The Whaler is a heck of a knife. If those Peanuts are Case, would you mind a close-up of the tang stamps? I'm curious about the model number given on the back of the blade on the bottom one too. It looks kind of like some of the Mamnoth Ivory they've been using.

I can agree with much of what you say, coffeecup. Except the above, any knife is better than no knife! Id even take a made in china pos over nothing at all! Thank goodness I have a peanut to escape such issues!

Dang Bob, you have my mouth watering now, I hope you're right. I paid $40 for all three knives.

I have to agree with TAB on this one. Any knife is better than no knife at all. If you dont have one when you need it, you will know what I mean. Most of us have been there.

No offense intended but...

Just because you wouldn't want to carry one on a regular basis doesn't disprove the usefulness of this frame/pattern. Sounds more like choice rather than usefullness of the pattern to me. You yourself said you skinned a deer AND a steer with one. What better testament than that to this sub-3.25" knife, 2-3/4" knife to be exact, even if beyond their intended use? Job got done just took longer I am sure.

Not sure NO knife in possession would have worked on skinning a deer and a steer. Your teeth or a stick going to get that job done?

By the way, I don't EDC any of my Case knives at this point but I will when I choose 1 or 2 that are what I want, so being partial to Peanuts does not factor into to my response. Never carried one. Got one out now and sure would like to have it rather than nothing. A CASE XX Peanut is one of them I set aside 2 weeks ago. Lots of frames/patterns to choose from in my collection but once a uncarried knife in put in the pocket, it is used, in my opinion. Everyone does it different.

I value your opinion but respectfully disagree with you on the points I stated.

I don't want to derail the thread any farther than I did by this response. Enough said by me.

I like the looks of the peanuts, and if the choice were no knife, cheap Charlie chicom, or peanut it'd be peanut all day every day period! And I do need some just to have them in the knife box and to give to the boys. I'll correct my dereliction of duty post haste!

That said, as my good friend TAB reminded me in an email I'd probably have a hard time using one as an edc. You see I've got these long fingers and I can only wrap them so far around a knife. The good thing is being a big guy, I've got big pockets so I can pack a larger knife with no problem.

But after reading this I will do my best to add a few peanuts to the stable, you've convinced me, I'll neglect them no more.

I got about 10 or 12 peanuts incuding a 5 blader. More into the pre USA Case knives and I got a few in the 20 pattern.

Here is a CASE XX yellow comp with thin white liners...

Hey Glenn,

Sounds like Grand dad was as sharp knife himself! No one in their right mind would carry a knife for 40 years that was not usefull. Good memories of that knife I am sure.

Just out of curiosity, where is the knife now? Would be a sentimental one for me for sure. Hope you or family still has it.
