All About Pocket Knives

I did not see a thread dedicated to Robert Klaas and his brands so i thought i would start one.
These knives seem to be often over looked and in my opinion are very well made knives.
Please post pictures of what you have, i would love to see them.

Nice one Tim. Love that beautiful gnarley stag. I only have one Klaas and outside of my Bose whittler it's my favorite whittler, even though it's a commemorative. The fit and finish is superb!!Wish I had more.Slim

In a book by Levine he says that this pattern always falls under physicians knives...( Though not a pill buster)... This thing has qnats azz blade centering crinking chinged or however you put it lol but it's rare and very nice...

Reddirt, that is a very classy looking whittler.

Here's my one and only, came into my possesion sort of by accident....tiny little guy, measures in at 2.5" closed. Unfortunately missing the front bolsters, but the stag is solid and it's got a classic look to it....

(...if any of you Klaas aficianados would be interested in giving this little guy a new home, I would be willing to consider trading him for something that fits into my accumulation a little better....maybe a Boker or something US made...)

I honestly can not answer your question about the wood. It looks awful light in person to be ebony.
I have read where Klaas has always used a lot of exotic woods in their knife making and even owned one
company ( Klaas & Co. GmbH) for that purpose.

I have two of the Robt. Klaas brands and they, thus far, are kind of mysteries. They are Crane Brand and feature only one crane (BRL says that they are actually storks??) One is a red plastic handled congress pattern and the other is a wooden handled, single bladed jack. The tang stamps for both are the same.

I do enjoy lookin at these knives, KLAAS has always done good with the stag handles.

Not to derail this thread, but I can't help but wonder why Mr. Levine would say they are storks when the shield clearly says "CRANE".

Robert Klaas owned 24 brand names in the early years not including Hen and Rooster and Bonsa
that he purchased in the 1980s. This is where i have trouble, determining what stamp goes with which brand.
I have invited Mr. Guido Schiesen of Klaas to join AAPK , I hope that he does.

As far as the storks go, Klaas called them storks originally but decided Cranes would go over better in the US export market .

BLR stated it was because Cranes where not native to Germany As i have stated before, he should try using Google.

As far as TJs congress is concerned, i can only guess that it was made after 1986. It has a pattern number the same
as Kissing Crane knives of that era.

Here is lock back that i received yesterday.
I had read reviews on this knife a year or so ago claiming it was as good or better than any
Puma ever made, so i had to see for myself.
All i can say is it is by far the best lock back of this style i have ever held.
I am very proud to own it.

Very nice lock back basser. I've never had the chance to hold one as a matter of fact I've never seen one for sale in person at all. Comparison to Puma is really saying something, I've had Puma lock backs and they would be hard to beat..... sweet knife

Great knives, I have a few. But I started shying away from them because at some point they started being made in China. Is it possible to tell from the tang stamping? Recently Robert Klass and Kissing Krane parted ways and I'm not sure if both might be made or put together in China. I know Jim Frost tries downplaying the China thing by stamping the steel Solingen but if it is put together in China it's China made to me. Which is fine but don't try pulling the wool over my eyes.

Redrider it's pretty easy to tell the difference.
The China made knives of Kissing Crane and Robert Klaas have "Since 1834" stamped on the tang.
The new German knives are marked Klaas and Solingen Germany.
Here is one of the new release Klaas knives of 2012.

Here are the few that I have. I happen to love R.K.'s knives from Solingen Germany. All have dragon snap, hearty blades and are sharp as razors. I plan to aquire more in the future. ::tu::Rocky
