All About Pocket Knives

Hello, My name is Carl Bradshaw. I'm 30 and received my first knife while still in the womb from my grandfather. He was the regional sales manager for Queen Cutlery in Titusville, PA during the 70's, and therefore I grew up around a lot of nice collectible knives.

My main collection right now is for the NKCA youth knives and prototypes, along with some nice Case knives from the Tested era, and a few other random ones mixed in. My grandfather still goes to shows every once in a while, and I really enjoy going with him, even though the shows have been a big disappointment the last few years. I'm happy to learn from everyone here and see some nice photos of collectable knives.

Welcome Rookie, nice looking collection. Its great that you got into collecting though your grandfather, and that he was a sales manager for Queen. Thats a wonderful bit of family history/tradition right there.

Yes, it is always fun to go visit him and see what new item he has picked up. He has quite a lot that he is always buying or selling, it's amazing some of the things he finds. And he's been doing it so long that when anyone around has a knife to sell, they know to ask him first. Likewise, if anyone is looking for a knife to buy, they also ask him first. I try to keep with his knowledge and all the stories behind the knives in his inventory/collection, but he's been collecting longer than I've been alive.

Also, is that Puma in the second picture, second column from the left, third knife down, one of the Puma Big Five Stockman's? Sure looks like it. If it is, which one is it?

Edit: I just noticed I see another in the third picture. Left column, third knife down. Tell me about that one as well.

Hi Jerry,

The Puma in the 2nd photo is the 2000 NKCA Youth Knife. It was called a "double blade stockman". I think it has one of prettiest jigged brown bone I have seen, it really glows in natural sunlight. The 3rd photo is the prototype of the same knife that was submitted to the NKCA that year for consideration.

I guess I should have expected that because you did say you collect NKCA youth knives and prototypes but I didn't know those knives exist. (I'm sheltered) Can we see pictures of them with the blades open?

I wondered because I have a set of the Big Five Stockmans and with the blades closed, they look alike. Same bone, Same color. Same jigging. Same shield.

The normal knife is on the left in both pictures, the prototype is on the right. My apologies for them being a tad blurry, my camera has never acted right since it got dust in it during an ATV ride last month.

You're right about how they look. These measure 3 3/8" closed. If that is the same length as yours, I would assume they made them from the same handles. The color/shield/jigging is identical.

The stockman is 4" closed.

Neat knife. That pattern would make a real good EDC.

I thought I would post an update. If anyone wants to view my NKCA youth collection, I have begun making my own website to display the collecton. I'm still working on the pictures, but you can view it at http://www.nkcayouth.com The main goal I was trying to accomplish is to have nice clear closeup photos of the tang stamps, blade etches, and handles. Along with information about each one.
