All About Pocket Knives

Here is an old Camillus Sword Brand with the Streamline blade etch and a 4 line tang stamp. The tang stamp was used until 1946. The earliest date for the 4 line tang stamp I can authenticate is 1933. So I would date this knife as having been made between 1933 and 1946.

I was very taken by the STREAMLINE blade etch, which is actually so deep it appears to be stamp rather than etched. The original handles were celluloid, which were off-gassing and had tarnished the bolsters. The off-gassing was so bad the liner on one side was broken in half. I had to find a stockman pattern of the same length then put the springs and blades in the good frame.


It came out pretty good considering I had to make a few adjustments with the frame change, I was happy with it, though the amber bone was not as light as I was hoping.
I am still having hand issues, but this was a good project to test and see just what my hands are still capable of and how bad the pain got.

Very nice Dale! I hope the hand pain wasn't too bad. The end result seems worth the effort as long as the pain was within tolerance. I believe I only own one at present, but those Sword Brand seem to have been a higher quality than most other Camillus knives made around the same time. This was one clearly worth restoring. Good to see you back in the shop even if it is only to test out your hands.

Here is another Streamline I have that I would like to restore.
I would like to do the handles in horn that looks similar to the original celluloid handles.
I think that would look really nice!

Yeah, great job Dale! That's the first time I've seen that etch, have to keep my eyes open for that one now!

If you use some of the lighter colored horn on the other one, you may wanna use a liner material underneath. Most of the lighter horn i've used was transparent when polished.

I have the same knife and doing a restore as well. You work is beautiful! All I am missing is a bolster. The handles fell off. I plan to make new handles in wood. Havent decided which wood yet. Do you know where I might find a bolster? Thanks.

You could look for a donor knife for the bolster that you need.
Otherwise you could make a new bolster and solder it onto the liner. I’m guessing the bolsters are nickel silver (but I don’t know for sure). If they are, you can get nickel silver stock from Jantz.com.
