All About Pocket Knives

I have always liked to make big sticks into little sticks etc. Decided to actually try and make something.
My lack of talent is stellar , almost embarassed to show them here but what the heck
Here's a couple lures I made recently and the beginnings of a small water foul. Using store bought balsa blocks. Practice, Practice, Practice

Looks like a zaraspook and a hulapopper to me. Nice work!

Just do it! Worst thing that can happen is wasting a block of wood - looks like you are off to a good start to me.

Make sure you seal them good & put them on a line & throw them in the water to see how they pull / move ? Looks good to me!!!

Thanks Big Barn I doub't that i'll fish with 'em or try 'em. I kinda doubt that they would be properly balanced/weighted. I have enough tackle for every member here to tie one on. These are just for fun.

The duck started to take shape today. I am using to big a tool for the job but for this one i'm gonna finish the dance with the one that brought me. Maybe next time i'll actually use one of my whittlers for it's intended purpose

Do you have any books? The stuff I have done are copies of some stuff I have in hand or that I free hand using my limited talent.

Would you recommend a good book that focuses on small stuff like, animals, figurals, mechanical whimsies etc. The only book I have was given to me probably twenty years ago. "How To Carve Wood, A book of projects and techniques" by Richard Butz. It has a basic overview covering whittling, chip, relief, wildlife, lettering, archetectural, tools, sharpening, woods & finishes etc.

I am looking for something more in depth for just whittlin'.

I have several books on whittling, and there is a lot of books out there that you can git very cheap.If you would like to have a good book for patterns then I would find a copy of "1001 DESIGNS FOR WHITTLING & WOODCARVING by E.J.Tangerman"Like the tittle say's, it has 1000s of good patterns for the type of stuff you have posted. E.J.Tangerman has written lots of other books on this subject since 1930s and you will find any of them to be full of good teachings for beginners like us.The books I have talked about and lots of others on the subject of whittling can be found on Amazon.com for less than $10.00 shipped.
I hope you keep posting what your working on so we can see,I have got some great ideas from this thread and I love to look at what others are working on.

Thanks brother. I will check on the books and author you recommended. Just like knife books, some are better than others and it's allways good to get some advice before wasting money on the wrong books.

In the pictures I posted above, the fowl on the right has a glued on bill because I went too far and messed up the first time. The boat has teeth marks from my lab pup who finds it to be the perfect chew toy if left at her level So far, I am only using pocket knives and will probably stick with them

I'll post more here as I go along you do the same. It's not an everyday thing for me with so much other stuff to do but with some new books and ideas
