All About Pocket Knives

Good morning!

First of all, great forum. I love the history and stories that come with some of these collectible knives!

After my grandfather's death, I received a black handled Henry Sears and Son knife that I am assuming isn't worth much outside of the sentimental value. I was told by another family member that it may have belonged to his father (or grandfather). It would be very interesting to determine the age and monetary value even if it's not for sale.

I've done as much research as I can and have learned the history of the company, but haven't been able to put an approximate age on the knife. I am hoping someone on this forum can possibly identify some key traits of this knife that would help narrow down the age range.

Any help would be appreciated!

Looks to me like you have a nice old knife. It's known as a "canoe" pattern, for obvious reasons.

Henry Sears did not make their own knives and I don't know who actually did the manufacturing.

Somebody with a more vast store of knowledge than I possess will be along with more info on your knife.

In the meantime, don't use any kind of abrasive surface or substance on the knife. Wipe the blade and backspring down with plain mineral oil, but avoid getting it on the handle.

I think she's a sweet little knife.

According to C.H. Price, stamping dates are,
H. Sears Mfg. Co. ~ 1865-1883
Henry Sears & Son Chicago ~ 1883-1897(sold to Farwell-Ozmun-Kirk & Co. ca.1887)
Henry Sears & Son 1865 ~ 1897-1959
The only info on who made them is that it was several prominent manufacturers.

Good lookin' old knife! Glad you feel the sentimental tie to it, so many these days don't!
