All About Pocket Knives

I had this dump into my e-mail today. It's the 2012 edition of the Remington scout knife reproduction. It's priced at $109.95 now but like the others I think if you wait you'll get it for less.
I have mixed feelings about these and I think most of you do as well. I just thought I would put up the picture they sent me.

Do they say how many they are producing in a run? I mean are they limited productions?

There's no mention of it being a limited run in the add I got

$109.95 I have bought some of the real vintage RS3333 for less than that.

Are there any differences between these "repros" and the original?

I believe these scout knives are made by Bear & Sons. Does anyone have any experience with any of their scouts specifically with regard to quality, fit and finish etc.?

I'll try to answer both questions. There are a bunch of subtle differences in the originals and the reproductions. The fit and finish on the reproduction knives I have (2009 and 2010 issue) are nothing close to the quality of the original Remington scouts. In fact there's been some discussion here on AAPK in the past about how the reproductions failed to measure up to the originals. These knives are made by Bear and Sons. I wish I could report they were fantastic because I'm all for suppoting what's left of the American cutlery industry. Unfortunately these knives, or at least the ones I have, leave a lot to be desired.

Only one pin in the handles? Thats what Camillus used to do with their knives. You'd think for the price they are asking for the knife it would at least have three pins in the handles. Does anyone know if the handles are bone or delrin? This years knife seems like it's falling short just by it's looks. I wonder what else is not right with this reproduction Remington knife if a person had it in hand to inspect? I thought Bear & Son had began to work out a lot of their problems with their knife making. It seems I was wrong. Don't take me wrong, I'm all for keeping all of the American knife makers in business but Bear & Son looks like they need to step up to the plate and do better.

Ah-Ha, three pin vs one pin, the point of difference i was looking for. It's these repros that make it hard on non-specific brand accumulators/collectors. Thanks Aimus and everyone else.

They describe the scales as "Mint Julep jigged bone". I wonder if that's what Remington called it back in the day?
