Monk,

Looking good. ::tu:: ::nod::

Curious...

Did you buy the slabs via mail order, or at a show where you could lay hands on 'em?

Those are spectacularly beautiful knives, Big Monk. I think they would be the centerpieces of any collection, the kind of knives we all dream about. Congratulations to you and Caleb both!

One thing that strikes me as most impressive is the massive thickness of the ivory. How thick were the slabs you started with, and what considerations did you have in choosing that thickness? I'm personally interested because I just sent Caleb a set of knives for rehandling in ivory, but I sent him slabs that were 1/8" thick (about the same thickness as the bone handles of the original GEC knives), and I suspect yours were 1/4" or larger. Of course one issue for me was the cost, but maybe you thought that thicker handles would be more durable & crack-resistant. They certainly are fine looking!

Tom,thanks for the kind words !!! ::tu:: _____you're right about the slabs, I try to find the 1/4 inch thick, just to give Kaleb more to work with and seems to fit my big hands better when finished !!! The cost issue in the ivory seems to be in the colors and length,more so than the thickness ::hmm:: I try to find 3 1/4 X 1 1/4 X 1/4 slabs,for my #73 GEC's__ I tend to have a #23 custom done,when I have to settle for a longer slab to get the colors I want,to avoid so much waste__but it don't always work out ??___ I've sent him slabs 1/8 inch & 3/16 inch, that have the good colors,and they worked well too !!!!____be sure to post your customs,when you get em' back ::nod:: _____Monk ::tu::

That's useful information from a man with experience. If I have the chance to have Muskrat Man do another custom, I think I'll go for a linerlock Scout with end bolsters and 1/4" slabs as in your first photo---it looks indestructable. I'll be sure to post pics of my customs when I get em---I think I'm in good hands with MM.
