How about we share some pics of Stag handles you consider to have "Character" These are always fun to look at for me. I cant wait to see your pics!

I just got a Med Stockman that was in my price range and I love the "character" on this one.

Note: One thing I would like to look at on others is how the stag is drilled to accommodate the pins. The thickness of this one leaves a little lighter color around the pin. I was thinking of delicately putting a little dark walnut wood stain around them. Bad idea?

Being sort of new to the hobby, I wonder about the validity of many of the manufacturers stating "Genuine Stag" handles on newer offerings. I wonder if they're being truthful. Any thoughts?

I'd say that if the word "Bone" is nowhere to be found... (eg. BoneStag [Case] or Stag Bone [Bear] or stagged bone [various])... and it is said to be "genuine" stag...it probably is stag.

MOST of the German knives will be European Red Deer stag...

...because there has been an embargo imposed by India since the late '90s. There does seem to be more Sambar Stag showing up lately, however, and is still very popular on custom knives, or special runs of production knives.

This is not a very good picture (sorry) but it was once a 1978 3 bladed bone stockman, that has been customized. I hope you can see the raised "Popcorn" effect that is characteristic of Sambar Stag.....

This has always been a favorite of mine. Its a Parker Damascus Blade stag handle.. It came as a set with a Saddlehorn Case Classic XXX..

I've heard "Winterbottom" is another false stag name
Here's another old Hen and Rooster. I believe this may be Sambar, it has that pop corn effect.

some nice thick stag on a Bulldog Gentlemans knife... As much as I like the ivory handles I think good stag is hard to beat....

heres a nice one with character...at least i think so...lol. its an 8 dot, 1982 case eisenhower pattern, 05263. ive had it in my collection for quite a while and its in mint condition with beautifully colored stag.

I sold the one I posted at the first here. I cant find a stag handle I have now that measures up to those.

It seems there is a bit of personal taste involved in this too. I tend to cater towards the yellowish Stag but those hen and roosters sure lok cool.

I guess my fav stag I have right now would be the BigNut or maybe the 1970 10 dot.

It is a great topic, Hawke. Handle material is a big factor for me in my collection, and I'm sure with most other collectors too. I'm partial toward certain colors, materials, even jigging. Would be nice to post pics of different types in other forums for conversation. Those are some very nice Case's you got there, by the way. I'll throw another one of these old German stags up if you dont mind them. It's a Twin Henckels congress.

Did you notice on my BigNut how the stag is even up above the Shield on one side? At first I didnt like that, but as time when by I realized how unusual that really is. Most of the time I'd say that would be smoothed down, and would be the first part of the knife to get worn down, and therefore pretty rare handle uh?

Lemm give you a fresh pic of that area.

Sorry this is so long after,but this knife has the thickest stag I have ever seen, it is thicker than a quarter at the back of the knife.

Gotta show off mine, I just picked this up Sunday.

1998 Bulldog Copperhead in Stag with carbon blades.

I know I am staggering out of the chute in comparison to these great pieces of artwork but I have to at least add one in the mix. As usual the pics don't show what you really want to share but I can say that we had to call in Fire & Rescue to save one child who fell off the edge of the stag on oneside.
