All About Pocket Knives

I'm new to the pocket knife world. Not to the knife world.

I would like some help. I'm looking for a couple of edc knives. I like old fashion, old school . (50)
I have an issue. I live very remote, the closest store that would carry a GEC knife is at least 6-7- hours away. This makes it impossible to go and handle the knives before I buy them.

So maybe some suggestions from you members would help.

I like a heavier feel knife. One with no more than 2 blades. One larger , one smaller. 3'' blade at least.

Take a look at the ""new release"' knives___ the #23 or #42 are both larger heavy knives ( you may want a sheath to carry??)___ it's hard to tell exactly what you want ???___ the #53 Moose pattern is also a large stockman like pattern, with two blades you may be interested in ??? the #48 is a traditional trapper pattern with two baldes___any of these would make a great EDC__good luck,Monk***

No sheath, just a suede slip cover in pocket, or do you recommend a leather one.

One that might interest you is the #54. Made in several configurations, the Moose seems to fit your requirements.

I agree with the previous recommendations … going by your description, the #53 Cuban Stockman, #53 Muskrat, #54 Moose or #54 Jack would be great fits for you.

Another of my favorites is the #54 Whittler - nice big clip main and the secondaries are nice size as well … here's some pictures to get you going … these are around 4 1/8" closed, and are some beefy knives - you have to hold one to really appreciate them.

53 Cuban in Snakewood: 53 Cuban in Yellow Bone: 53 Muskrat in Bocote: 53 Improved Muskrat in Green Bone: 54 Moose (Burnt Stag): 54 Jack (a little harder to come by): 54 (3-spring) Whittler: The 73 Scout Trapper may be another option (3-3/4" closed) … If you need any more suggestions, this is the place to ask … great folks here.

I guess the Barlow is too short for my liking ? Sure do like the shape, and sturdiness it appears to have.

Rather than specific dealers, I'd offer some general advice on internet dealers no matter what brand you are buying.

I'd avoid dealers who don't inspect the knives before shipping them out, and who won't stand behind the knife (i.e. replace it rather than making you deal with the factory). Know before ordering what the dealer's policy is on returns for defects: ask who pays shipping, and if there is a re-stocking fee (I got hit with paying shipping both ways, AND a 15% restocking fee, on a defective knife). If you don't like the answers, don't deal with them.

In general, if I wanted any knife of any brand that I wasn't real familiar with, I'd probably get my first knife or two via the AAPK member-owned stores, or the "Knife Commerce" section of the forums. That sort of gives you an "in" with the dealer or seller, and takes away a lot of the potential headaches.

The Barlow knives are ""EXTRA STOUT"" in my opinion,but at 3 inches,( 1/2 shorter than most brands**) they are to small for my hands ___ if you are wanting a smaller knife,but stronger/stout blades the #56 Dogleg Jack pattern, at 3 1/2 inches, is a great choice and only two blades (photo below) ----- the #48 Traditional Trapper pattern has three different blade combinations ( shown below) that you can choose from,and is 3 7/8 inches__ I've carried one for several years and really like it**

Most of the GEC's, that I EDC are are 3 3/4 or better,just because that's my size of choice

It can be tough to make a purchase like this sight unseen, I can definitely relate …

There are some really good online merchants that sell GEC, (and some maybe not so much) … each have their little "ways" about them, and you have to find who and what you're comfortable with.

I can vouch for Barry (Gunstock Jack) as well, and these other fellas (Jerry, Coffeeecup, and Monk), they ain't too shabby either …

What you have stumbled upon (in AAPK) is one of the most open and helpful knife communities I know of, and the gentlemen that have spoken up here are some of the best - they'll tell ya straight.

I've dealt with Boggs, Monk and Gunstock Jack. I can recommend all of them with no reservations. Outside AAPK (sort of. Mike is also a member here but has his own forum) Mike Latham of CollectorKnives.net is good to deal with as is Greg at TSA Knives and the folks down at Reedcutlery.com. I almost forgot Old Hundred Collectibles out in WV.

You can't go wrong with any of those guys. Every one of those guys will bend over backwards to make sure you're satisfied (within reason of course). Just find the one who has what you're looking for and buy with complete confidence.

Love it Jack. The only thing is I want to et one with bolsters at both ends if possible. You and monk have some great photos and ideas. I like the color . It seems I like the " stag, or pioneer bone, or antique handles " better than the woods or modern materials.

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION HERE....for all you die hard case fans

I had never touched a GEC, hell never really heard of em when I bought my #23. I own several case knives and I read some reviews and figured, "hell, Ill order one and if its not up to par with what I am looking for, Ill sell it or keep it in the collection." I use my knife every day. I have started collecting recently, but my GEC purchase was for an old fashioned, modern day knife that I could use. Something with nice scales and blade materials. I dont use my old case knives, or my classics because...they flat out dont make a good knife anymore, and Ill be damned if I ruin a good one from the old days. My GEC came in the mail, and I almost had to change my underwear when I first laid eyes on it. It makes any of my case knives cry. I have since ordered six more, I carry a #54 everyday, and if they werent so pretty, id use em all. In my opinion...there is no better knife for whatever purpose. Now, if youre going to cut bailing wire....go to home depot and get a sod buster for $10. If youre going to cut an apple, piece of rope, sausage, pulled pork, leather, stick...anything reasonable...and you want American made quality to do it....get a GEC. Here are some pictures for size comparison purposes

the medium one is a #54 moose (my favorite)

The one in the belt sheath is the same size as the moose...its a 54 big jack. 4 1/8 inches

Dont be scared. Just order one, and if you dont like it...ill buy it from you!
