All About Pocket Knives

i've got an old 4 line, equal end, cigar pattern, 3 blade (spear master,pen, and leather punch) stock knife, 3 3/8" closed, brown rogers bone, bar shield, camillus that has 3 backsprings-i'm wondering how rare this knife is???.....i've never seen another camillus with 3 backsprings!!!..........

As I recall, I have not seen one like that.
I would love to see a picture or two of it.

jerry, if i tried to do what you suggested, i would shut down the entire tva system!!!!...you don't realize what an electronic dummy you are dealing with!....this will give you an idea..i just loaded my argus c-3 camera with ektachrome 64 film(have 6 rolls left in the freezer) and took pictures for dale. i am considering putting my old rotary dial phone back on the wall, and throwing away all the electronic phones, cameras,remote controls,etc. in the house .....my wife says i'm an electronic retard!!!...i guess that's why i like old knives so much...............

dale, i'll get them in the mail to you asap, i have your address!!!..i'm also sending a couple of another knife that may be kind of unusual- i have 6 of the splitback(pre #72 pattern) whittlers-i have 1 that does not have a shield???....the other 5 all have the "bomb" shield.

The three backspring knife is very rare, albeit, looking at the 1928 Sword Brand catalog, I've never seen many of those knives either.

It's also very unusual in my experience to find a 4 line Camillus without all blades marked, although seeing an unmarked punch isn't really surprising.

iv'e got a sleeveboard whittler(4line) that has a nail file that is unmarked, also have 2 senator's that have unmarked nail files-one of the senator's is the early 3 line.also have a 4 line scout pattern that has only the primary blade marked- i'm wondering if maybe their policy in those years was to only mark cutting blades??? ..............

I think you may be right John.
I don't ever recall seeing a nail file with a tang stamp, of any brand, (though no doubt someone did).

I think a tang stamped punch is not very common either. Though I am sure I have seen punches with a tang stamp, I don't ever recall seeing it on a Camillus or a Schrade, the two brands in which I have the most examples and with which I am most familiar.

dale, i guess i was wrong again!-just checked a few of my older camillus knives and i have a 4 blade senator-it has the arched 3 line stamp on all blades-one of which is a nail file-just when you think you've got something figured out,you discover you were wrong again!!!..........

I just picked up a Camillus 69 Deluxe Stockman 197x-198x off eBay. Now I'm wondering if the Deluxes from that late still had the milled liners. It looks to be in excellent condition but I'm going to be a very disappointed boy if there's no jimping on those liners.

IIRC the arched stamp would be WWI or before, depending on which one it is.
I don't have more than a dozen or so Camillus' of that vintage, so I am not totally surprised. It seems most companies used to stamp all the blades 100 years ago.
It seems sometime around WWII most companies stopped stamping secondary blades and only stamped the master blade.

I don't know of a Schrade or Camillus made after WWII that has a stamped punch, though there may very well be some. I don't think I have ever seen a nail file blade stamped, no matter the age.

dale, while i was looking at all those tang stamps, i noticed that on the tip-bolstered 4-line lobster knife, the secondary blade tang is so small, they went to the trouble to stamp it lengthwise. the pick blade(have no idea how you use this,i never ate a lobster, all we got down here is crawfish , and all you need for that is 4 good fingers) is so narrow, there's no way you could stamp it!...........
