Just thought this mite spark some intrest.

Cutting, flattening, and shaping your own scales can be a real pain. Never know when you are going to hit a void inside the shell that you can't see from the outside. I have some Red Abalone shells from last dive season in the backyard, maybe 1 or 2 might be worth doing - Maybe.

I bid on them.
I was thinking of just placeing one in my show case.
I saw some one had one on a wall with his knives. I am old so can not member who it was. But it looked real nice to me. Perhaps he will show us his photo agin. They were on glass bent to make shelves and had a photo on it too with his knives.

They do make nice displays and good backgrounds for taking knife pictures. My office is loaded with shells, about 10 different species of abalone, including all California species.

My Pleasure always to show off my five inch ticklers, focusing on my favorites: Those with real and celluloid Abalone, and MOP handles.

I designed the nook or niche into my basement man-cave when I built it, to show off these. A couple of halogen recess lights provide the lighting. The shelves come from Home Depot. Straight glass would have worked, of course, and been cheaper,, but I thought that the bent glass accented the sensuous curves of the pattern of knife I enjoy the most.

Yes the bent glass is CLASS. But those knives are TOP SHELF.

You mean like these 4 Reds that are 9 inch +, theres a Pink at the bottom right. Actually a whole wall has that fishing net with all California species somewhere on it.

OR, like this 10 5/8 inch trophy my wife is holding, it's over 9 inches wide to boot. That bad boy had 5 LBS of sliced meat in it. At that time farmed abalone was being sold to resturants for $135.00 per LB.

How about this rare pink abalone (Haliotis Corrugotta) I took down south decades ago. It's rare because of the color, it's torquoise.

It is illegal to sell sport caught abalone in California. Charges are conspiracy against the state of Ca and can get you 3 years in PRISON + $20,000 to $40,000 in fines, loss of vehicle, house and dive gear, anything that was used to catch, transport or hold illegal abalone. I'ts against the law to sell or give away ANY part of a sport caught abalone. Now you know why I never give anything away, this is the most highly regulated fishery in the world.

There is no longer a commercial abalone season in California and there never was in Northern California. This is the major reason why laminated abalone came about, lack of shell from the commercial processors. In addition only 1 to 2 percent of all shells are suitable for knives.
