All About Pocket Knives

There are many different jigged patterns, and I'm having a hard time identifying them all on the different knives that I've somehow inherited.

There's the standard jigging, which I think I have figured out, but I know there's Rogers Bone, Smooth, Peachseed, Corn Cob, Rogers Corn Cob, etc. etc. Can someone tell me the difference between all these?

And how many cutting or jigged patterns are there? Is there a resource somewhere on the web that will give me this information? I've also just ordered Sargent's recent book . . . will that give me this info?

I'm also noticing, when I look at the pricing guide, that some are listed as "red bone" and some are listed as "reddish bone," etc. I'm still hoping someone can (or is willing to) give me an answer on what all these differences are. Thanks.

No, most of my knives are older. I have about 50 pre-1970 knives. Most are similar in the jigging patterns, but some are clearly different & I just don't know what they are.

I'm also having trouble with handle materials. I have an old CASE Tested 6265 SAB . . . and I can't tell if it's 2nd cut stag, or green bone, or just bone or what. I'm having the same identification problem with lots of the knives (especially the older ones).

There is nobody who is going to be able to tell you about every jigging pattern. No book, no movie.
That is part of what makes knife collecting a challenge. You can post pictures here, and get learned guesses and opinions, on all the jigging patterns, especially those shown on the Case website. Or...you may not get a good answer, if folks aren't sure.

what bill said. however if you buy a copy of THE STANDARD KNIFE COLLECTOR'S GUIDE, it has a pretty good color photo section with a lot of the older jigging patterns shown. i was gonna scan them in but i must wait for permission.

OK then,

Here's an old Tested 6265 SAB . . . it has green bone handles (I think). Is this grooved green bone? Or is it second-cut green bone?

It's pretty banged up. You can see that the handle has holes which have been filled in by some sort of resin or something.

Anyway, what jigging pattern is this? Just normal? Rogers? What? Thanks.

Looks like "Old Jigged Bone" Case jigging, with wormgrooves, to me. It looks like Green Bone, but maybe, now with pictures, one of the folks who are really good at Case knives will chime in with corrections.

Hello SH, something else to think about on the 65 pattern tested era knives, is the shield. Many of these knives have the open "C" on case making me believe tested knives were made latter than 1920-1940. Your knife has the open "C" One thing that you can bank on is that nothing is for sure when dealing with knives.
