All About Pocket Knives

I just joined AAPK. I'm new to the computer and thought I would try a forum or discussion place. I like knives, swords, (cutthroat) straight razors, and all kinds of cutting tools. I came upon this forum and thought I would join. I know there are many people who reads and posts on this forum who has lots of years of knife experience. I come to you hoping you can tell me about a knife I have. I have no pictures to send and I haven't learn yet how to send pictures over the Internet. But here goes.
The knife description: (1)It is a Gescut knife. (2)Closed length is 4 inches and opened length is 7 inches. (3)It has 2 blades. Each is 3 inches long. (4)The handle material appears to be either stag or horn with brass pins attaching the handle. (5)The bolsters appear to silver. (6)The handle name plate is stamped with "GESCUT". (7)The clip-point blade near the hilt has "GESCO" with "JAPAN" underneath. (8)The spay-point blade has the number "16" near the hilt. (9)There is slight rust and metal discoloration. Overall the knife's condition is good. (10) It appears the blades have never been sharpened. Each of the blade's edges look like it does when you purchased a new knife.
I would like to know about how old it is? Also is it worth anything? I like the knife. But I want to get some info on it before I put a edge on it. Sharpening may take away from its value.

Every GESCO knife I have ever seen appeared to be made by Sabre - Japan, and as such the value, and the number of collectors out there, is minimal. The knife you describe sounds like a trapper model, and one sold recently on ebay for $.99. I think you would be safe sharpening it up and putting it to use.

Im afraid I can't help you with your knife, but I know there are plenty of fellers here who can. So just hang tight and prepair to get to know the goofiest bunch of knife experts you could ever meet.
I can just about garuntee that one thing they'll be asking for is a couple good pictures. Took me quite a while to figure out too, but it really is the easiest way to get to the bottom of your quest. just get yerself a camera, or I even used a cell phone camera quite a bit, and yer on you way
AAPK was pretty much my first real "online activity" too, but the guys here are so helpful, that it didn't take very long to learn the ropes. Im sure you'll be postin pics and new threads all the time. and you will definitly find out a little more about that knife of yours.

The knives in the link that Jerry posted are all listed as "vintage" - and vintage
with the Japanese knives is normally the 1970's. That was the "Japan decade" of
importing knives to the U.S.
Please don't get me wrong though - there ARE older Japanese knives out there too.

The main importers of these knives were/are Parker, Taylor, and Frost.
