Do you store your GEC knives in their tube?

Do you store your GEC knives in their tube (or a roll or etc, etc)?

Up until recently I stored mine in a knife roll. My collection is now up to about 110 GEC made knives and I got a wild hair to put them all back in their tubes so there wouldn't be any confusion about which knife went with which tube.

Well, after about a month of this I have decided I don't like this at all, it's just too much trouble to look at my knives with them all in the tubes.

How do you guys store your GEC's? I have a Case knife carrying case that'll hold about 70 something knives and think I'm going to put the bulk in it.

Well....With my meager 25 or 30 pc. GEC collection, these work well, but with 110+ I'll have to use knife rolls. I'll eventually put my "special" GEC's in the boxes and the rest will go back in the rolls.

Tubes only.

Had bad experiences with knife oil and colored cloth knife rolls and elastic bands in rolls and cases, I'm speaking long term.

Sorry I don't have a photo at this time. I keep my GEC Northfields in my vintage Gerstner Toolmakers oak chest. I've had the chest for about 25 years, I bought it used ,(I've been a Toolmaker for 32 years) and I recently decided to store my knives in this great old chest.

Hey Russell___ for all my GEC's not in a display case----I use the silicone treated gray cotton "Sack-Ups" knife rolls___ I have the ones that hold 18 knives ( they make several sizes from 1 to 18 ) ____ this makes for easy in & out, so that you can take a look at your knives, play with em',clean em' and put back in storage, without all the hassel ____ I still clean all my ""new knives"" oil the joint, Ren-Wax the entire knife (blade & scales) before storing in the Sack-Ups___I have all the tubes stored by year of production :) _______good luck,Monk ::tu::

But for the few that I carry, I keep them in the tubes but don't really like it either. :( At least when they're in the tubes I don't worry about them getting pepper spots though.

I store 'em in drawers lined with acid free mat board (for picture matting). That way I can pull the drawer and look at a whole bunch at a time. I can review the whole collection in minutes if I want. The tubes go in boxes; it's not that tough to find the correct tube if need be.

Too difficult to get at in the tubes so I keep the few I have in a small folder. Works for me.

Thanks for all the replies,

Right now I have taken them out of the tubes and put them in the knife "book (similar to a roll but flat). Of the storage ways I'm liking big monk's idea of the Sack Ups. I'll be looking into a few of these. I have one that holds a few knives, but I didn't know they made them so large. They do seem to protect the knives well and they have pretty much no chance of "clanking" together like they can in a roll.

Here's the book I'm talking about. I have two of these. Not too bad, but I think the Sack Ups might add more protection.

This is all one book.

I bought them from the Case knife outlet (they have Case on the cover) which I happen to live pretty close to www.caseknifeoutlet.com

The price on them has really gone up since I bought them about 5 years ago, one reason I haven't bought any more.

Thanks. I didn't see any on the web site but I do see them occasionally on eBay.

This is the way I store mine as well, with the exception of the dozen or so I recently found in a box on my closet shelf and I am trying to remember why I left those in tubes and for the life of me ….

… wait ... what was I talking about? …

Paul, you're the Little Old Lady Who Lived In A Shoe. You know. The one who had so many knives she misplaced them.

Well, some of them get stored in the box and some not. I just keep that knives in the tube, I don´t EDC regularly. My gave me a #66 Moose for our anniversary, and I just carry it on sundays and on holidays. This one gets stored in the tube. My very first GEV, I ever got (#66 Serpentine Jack with orange bone handles) also gets stored in the tube. I just carry it for outdoor trips. No EDC. Both knives, I use to keep well oiled.

Kind regards
Andi

I bought a cheap knife "wallet" zip up thing on ebay for 9 bucks. A couple of my knives got some pepper spots...storing in tubes will prevent this?

Side note...I started oiling them with mineral oil once a month to preserve them. I EDC one of em, and i dont care about spots and such...the ones I paid good money for to look at are the ones that get me. If storing in the tubes will keep them from discoloring...that will work.

Is it possible the cause of the spotting is where you live and not the "wallets"? Just judging from your screen name, I've wandered off into dangerous territory and assumed you live in Texas. I could be way off base on that but if it's true and you live down on the Gulf Coast where it's very humid, that could be the cause. I store all but a handful of my knives in the "wallets" and so far, I've had no problems at all.

Now you're going to tell me you live in Texas but it's West Texas and blow my theory all to smithereens.

I'm in the south, gulf coast-ish area, HIGH humidity. I store all of mine wether they are GEC's or not, in zip cases but I also put the little moisture (dessicant??) packs in the case as well. I save them out of medicines and anything else that comes packed with them. I just throw a few packs in the middle and zip 'em up. So far I haven't had any problems with pepper spots etc. I also keep them wiped down, oiled and ren waxed or flitz'd as well.
