5254 trapper questions

I would like to get an opinion on this trapper that I picked up on Ebay.
My concern is that the spey blade is stamped 6254 SSP and not 5254

I called Case and they said that for this to be a factory mistake would not be unheard of.

It is a 1976 Tested XX Razor edge, and I paid less than half what the AAPK price guides shows.

Just wanted to know you guys opinion

Yes, I would be concerned a little as well. It looks exactly like it should for a 1976 genuine stag trapper, except that it most definitely should be 5254. I don't know how common factory errors like this are??? I bet it happens occasionally though. If it's a rehandle job, it sure does look like a good one. It appears as though you got a very nice looking knife regardless, and... if you didn't pay much, I would be pleased if it were me.

Jeff,

That is a nice knife...and some GREAT looking Sambar stag... ::tu::

Since you are in the business, I'm sure you probably looked inside the liners to see if an embellisher signed his/her name. But as Bryan said, it does seem like a rehandle...or less probably, a blade replacement or factory error.

Did you try Shirley Boser on the Case forum?

Anyway, a great find.

Thanks for the opinions,
I really like the knife and it does have some very nice thick stag scales on it so, I will keep it and carry it to church now and again. I guess that if you like a knife it really doesn't matter what it is anyway. My problem is that I like 'em all.
Thanks again'
Jeff
