All About Pocket Knives

A while back, got some nice white bones scale for a future project. Looked at them the other day and a crack seems to have appeared, going about 1/3 the length of the 5" scales. This is almost in the center of the scales, so wouldn't get trimmed off. These have been in a drawer about a year. Is this possible to stabilize these using a good super glue? Or should I have to worry about it at all? Would normal epoxy & pinning in knife assembly solve the problem? The super glues commonly used in the R/C modeling community are usually far superior to a lot of them. Any suggestions for a dumb guy?

Wizrd, yes you can stabilize with super glue - I do it all the time.

Do you know, has the bone been de-greased, so you can color it? And do you want to color it? If you do color it you would be well advised to go the stabilization route afterwards.

Here's a sample of one I did like that - in this case I could have polished or sanded out the cracks as they are very shallow, but I wanted to keep them for a more rustic look.

As you know superglue is very thin and the better stuff runs better than water, but if you want to make extra sure it gets in everywhere, put the glue in the deepfreeze for an hour or so and heat the bone up (I put the bone in a box, with a hair dryer stuck in the side) and then put the cold glue on the hot bone - it just soaks it up - sucks it right in. Pretty much the same process as when you dye it - except you don't need to make the glue as cold as the dye, nor the bone as hot as for coloring it.
