All About Pocket Knives

Tom (CAMCO) asked to be post these pics of his Sherwood knife. I was excited to see this, as I've never run across one before. I note LT mentioned Charles Sherwood down in the Camillus Displays thread.

Neat, very old knife. Made in Camillus New York.

Sherwood knives were made from 1894 to 1896 in Camillus, New York.

The master is remarkably full for 110+ years old.

Charles Sherwood and his brother-in-law, Denton Bingham were immigrant English cutlers. They established a cutlery in Camillus. They did work for Millard Robeson beginning in about 1894-95. When their company began to fail, Robeson assumed control, keeping Sherwood and Bingham as directors. When Robeson was lured to Perry, New York about 1899, the Camillus facility was sold to Kastor Brothers who eventually made it The Camillus Cutlery Co.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong on any of that. I'm writing from memory.

Knives made by Sherwood/Bingham for Robeson were marked, ROBESON / CUTLERY Co. The backs of the master blades were marked, "PREMIER" or "WARRANTED".

Some Robeson knives imported from Germany after 1892 are similarly marked, but with country of origin.

I have a large 4 1/4" "PREMIER" whittler with ebony handles made by the Sherwood/Bingham cutlers, and will soon be in possession of an ebony jack with the "WARRANTED" mark. I just bought it on Ebay last week.

The big whittler had been cleaned when I got it.
I looked at it at a show in Chattanooga, but passed on it. It was cleaned, and it was priced high.
I thought about it all the way home, and by the time I pulled in the driveway, I regretted not having gotten it. So, I called the seller and bought it over the phone.

BTW; Anybody have any idea what name would apply to the pattern?
It's a swollen sleeveboard; sort of, but not quite an Anglo-Saxon whittler, and the bolsters are different lengths.
Suggestions?

Your dates are look good according to Goins'.
He says that Kastor bought it in 1901.

Nice rare knives Charlie. The whittler looks like an elongated cask or keg. How about a "Barrel" whittler??

The whittler frame looks like a penny roll to me.

That whittler looks like a kazoo I used to have. Maybe you should call it a kazoo whittler!
