All About Pocket Knives

Or at least thats what I think it is. My grandparents used to have a similiar looking item hanging near the wood cook stove. It holds the long stem wooden matches. I'm pretty sure this is a current repoduction, but its still kinda neat looking.

RC, what makes you think it is a reproduction? It looks pretty authentic from the picture you have here. I wish I could put my hands on some of the old things like this that came out of my grandparents house after their deaths.

I think that is cool! I also don't think it is a repro. I've seen these around before. Nice addition to a KK colleciton.

Any Keen kutter cast iron match holder you see is a fantasy item. Keen kutter NEVER made a cast iron match holder. What the conterfeiter did was take a old keen kutter grinder (sit down style with pedals) and remove the metal guard , and use it for the mold to cast a new match holder. then bury it so it would be nice and rusty and instant antique! Keen Kutter did make a match holder, but it was made out of tin and had beautiful lithographs on it. They are extremely rare. The Cast iron fakes have been around for a while now, and some of them do look pretty old now. There is a excellent reference book on Keen Kutter by Jerry and Elaine Heuring. On page 92 of their 2nd edition you can see the grinder I'm refering to. I used to collect just Keen Kutter knives, but after several hundred of them you quit finding anything different. So now I collect whatever strikes my fancy. I was pretty deep into anything k.k.for a while.

I'm always glad to know when I am wrong. Thank you for setting us all straight on this thing.

Knife-nut is absolutely right on this one. I own one too and had checked into the history before hand. There is a great group of guys that are crazy about old hardware company items. Just as nuts as we are. They set me straight years ago on this item and many others. Not old but neat none the less. I don't have their web site address handy but it was very interesting to learn about th old hardware houses. By the way I still paid $15 for it, but I like it and that is just as important. I didn't buy it as a rare collectable. Just to enjoy There are plenty of other Keen Kutter fakes out there so beware. Gosh maybe we need to start a counterfiet cutlery related forum. HAS IT REALLY COME TO THAT??? Maybe so

Been awhile since you fellas have chatted about this KK match holder . Picked this reproduction up for 8 bucks at a gun show last weekend. Will hang it up down in the knife room for a little decoration.
Was wondering if you still have a “ original “ one ,or anyone, that we could see a pic of . Have looked on a few sites but to no avail. Would really like to see the tin one with the lithography.

I have one as well. Mine is quite a bit more rusted up. Good to know it's not original, but for $10 I think it is still a nice piece to hang in the knife room.
