Abalone

Just bought my first abalone handled knife. It's a 2010 mini trapper and beautiful beyond words! I wanted to know if there is any special care required for abalone is there a protective film applied to new knives with handles made of it. The handles on my knife seem to have a film of some kind on them. I'm reluctant to peel it off, fearing that it might be part of the abalone itself. A little help would be appreciated.
