I found this one the other day.
I was really happy with my find, until I checked
online and found it was a fake.
Even the box looks real.

No, it is a copy made in China.
The blade is stamped Seki Japan.

Yup, hate to say it, but they are getting better and closer to the originals. Etched Lava's are getting hard to tell apart also.
Here is a sub of the Spyderco forum dedicated to them.

I see no harm in posting a link to information that is helpful to our members even if the information is posted on another forum. Just don't try to post links to those knockoff Air Jordans you're selling.

sorry, i am still in the dark here. are the spyderco/china knives being called fake just they are made in china? or is there another reason?

chet,
There are legitimate Spydies made in China but there are also a bunch of fakes coming from there. I'm not enough of a Spyderco collector to tell you which ones are being faked or even how to spot one that's fake. I do know it's not a good idea to buy on ebay from a seller who is located overseas. I've also seen some SOGs that were clearly not the real deal, so it's not just Spyderco that is dealing with this issue.

Okay....
- Spyderco is making some knives in China - mostly the "Byrd" line and marked China.
- There are a few "Spyderco" branded knives made in Taiwan, mostly Taichung, and are every bit as high quality as the stateside and Japan ones, some better.
- Unscrupulous makers are copying mostly Japan knives in China and are as fake as can be.

maybe???
And when it comes to the fakes, the only way to really tell is to investigate one by one, no real hard and fast rules when it comes to those so-and-so's.

Very nice collection, Paul.
Got a PPT I see … one of my favorite EDCs.
That burgundy micarta Jester is a bit of a treasure these days - you've got quite a few gems in there … very very nice.
