All About Pocket Knives

i am not familiar with this sort of knife,tool. predecessor to the leatherman. can anyone give their opinion on this and possible value?

Chet, the knife sold to somebody for $225.00.
I suspect that auction result reflects its value at this time.
O. Barnetts in really nice condition are few and far between. When they were being produced, I suspect none of them were bought by a knife collector. They were used on farms, ranches, shops, etc.
I have not seen but a handful that were in as good or better condition than the one you posted. In fact, I'd say I've seen about as many with a replaced master blade. I suspect that means the original master was either used completely up or broken.
That's a very nice Barnett. Not mint, by any means, but very nice. I think there's significant original finish on the blades.
That would have been a good one to own.

charlie, and everyone else. i thank you because that is my bid. he was asking $339 and with my very limited knowledge on this sort of knife, i offered more than $100 less.
maybe if i saw tims list first i would have offered $150 less than his asking price. but the tool/knife does seem as close to original as i can uneducatingly make out.
this is the only way for me to actually inspect what i consider quality knives. as long as the seller has a return policy. i will update this when i get the knife. in the meantime anyone else that has anything to offer, please do not hesitate, and i appreciate all honesty. feel free to give it the critical going over if need be.

Chet, I know a fellow knife collector and knife historian here in town that has an unused, but time patinaed O. Barnett tool knife. He would not take less than $400.00 for his.

I think you done good.

You know, the knife is close to or more than one hundred years of age.

i hope this knife is as good as it looks and as good as the seller claims.
looking at his feedback, he has sold some great knives with complete satisfaction.
i will just have to wait to get this beauty to play with. he seems to be an old harley nut also. now you can trust them,,can't you??

Chet, you know what they say about opinions, but here comes mine anyhow. I think you got a good deal on a fine piece of American cutlery history. You didn't "steal" it but you got a very decent price. Unless there are flaws that don't show in the photo, my opinion is you got a really good buy.

Not to open a can of worms, but you do know that there are several variations of that knife don't ya ? You know what that means...........yep, you gotta find the rest of em now.

thanks phil, i figured for that price it wasn't a steal but it looks like a good example to start that collection, now that my nkcas are complete. i just can't seem to remind myself about our household finances
does anyome know what the others look like just so i am not misled. is there a textbook or an old catalog from that period that someone could share.

Chet I have 2 of them 1 not quite as good as the 1 you will get
(blade loss due to use) and 1 mint blade and punch, the only thing
wrong with it is the original owner tried to take the horse shoe off
with horse pick and broke the pick off right at the curve. Looking
for some one who could build it back up. As to price, I think you are
right in there.

i got the knife/tool today. and after looking it over i noticed a crack in the scale. it really isn't a noticable crack, it is in the 4th picture, i just didn,t notice that before. i emailed the seller about it and asked for partial refund or i will send it back for full refund.
does anyone here want to purchase this tool/knife for what i paid. it is in pretty good overall condition. if no one wants it and the seller wont give a satisfactory partial refund. it will go back, minus my return shipping.
figured i would just present the opportunity here first. thank you all for your imputs.

Too bad about the crack in the scale, they are pretty cool knives. But, how will you ship it back minus your return shipping?

i will get my original buying price plus the shipping i paid to get it here. i will lose my shipping cost to send it back.

Quality Barnett Plier Horseman Knife. The condition is excellent. The blade is near full. The bone scales are near perfect without cracks or chips. The blades snap well. Measures about 4 1/4" long closed.

looking at your list tim. i checked the two highest prices paid and then i checked the sellers feedback on both. there were no feedbacks on either of those tool/knives. that makes me think that they were also returned. so then i checked the feedback on the 3rd highest price which was $154. there was positive feedback on that one. so i emailed my seller for a refund of $60 which would match that 3rd highest price. if he doesn't agree, then it will be sent back.
i will request that my return shipping be paid at that time. thanks

well the issue is closed now, he refunded the amount asked with no problem at all. i probsably could have asked for more but then i would be the underhanded one here. i believe looking at your results tim, of past and previous barnetts, it is now a fair market price.
thank you very much tim, you opened my eyes on that deal.
i didn't even know that back checking on previous sales could be done. now i will enlist that practice in all my purchases before i bid again.

I'm sorry the knife wasn't as nice as we all thought it to be.

I almost felt guilty, but then I remembered you'd already made your offer before we expressed our opinions.

I looked at the photos of the auction and think I have identified the sixty dollar crack. If this is it, you really got the knife for a good price. That's hardly detractive.

yep thats the crack charlie.. and thanks for the thumbs up on the knife. it almost needs magnification to be seen.
