All About Pocket Knives

This is not your regular run-of-the-mill horticulture or grafting knife. It's an ivory handled knife handle with multiple exchangeable blades, although one blade is missing from the set. That's a shame, too, because if this set was complete, it would border on the unbelieveable.

I love the way they crafted that "shield" on the ivory handle.

It's French in origin.

It's currently listed on a popular internet auction site with a high starting bid. Quite high.

But, it's a thing of beauty and I thought you'd all like seeing it.

very nice, but your right. $1300 bucks is a bit steep. even if the other blade was there. but someone would buy it.

Looking at that empty space, I think that fancy clip would have been my favorite blade.

You're rcorrect, Chet. There are some well-heeled collectors that wouldn't think twice about this set at $1300.00, if it was complete.

Is the grafting spud on the end made of tortoise shell or did the auction say?

the seller doesn't state what the spud blade is made of. it looks like tortoise to me, just because of the high end materials and looks of this knife. he states that the spud does assist in the spring mechanism to accept the blades.

but from what i gather by your post charlie, i don't think you are going to bid on it. not at that price and not with the missing blade, which i also think is the best of all the blades. someone??? might be interested in it from aapk. good luck

let me know what you think of the barnett, i am willing to put an offer on that one. but some imput first if possible.. if someone wants to pay the whole price i will not come close to it.

When I first joined AAPK, I wasn't aware of the rules, spoken or assumed. I started placing links to Ebay auctions of nice vintage knives in The Knife Lore Forum.

I very soon received a PM from Johnnie Fain telling me to cease, as he was receiving complaints from members.

For that reason, I do not post links to active Ebay auctions in Knife Lore.

However, I thought this particular knife to be so exceptional and obviously expensive that most likely, no one here would be bidding on it and I thought it would fit better here than in General Discussion Forum.

That's why I didn't include the URL in my original post.

I suspect some of the older guys are chaffing a bit at this thread being in Knife Lore.

I should have waited until the auction was over.

i didn't know there were any rules against this. i was only concerned for you charlie, since it was your topic. also i was wondering why you didn't post that sell either. i see postings of active ebay sales all the time on aapk, that is why i didn't even think of that aspect.
i figure that we all do business on ebay, at least the majority of us aapkers. and it is an open auction.

well, as you probably know already..i offered the seller $125 less for that barnett, and he accepted.. for good or bad, that knife is mine. and since i am not in the market for selling. the tool will hopefully only appreciate in value. i want to thank you charlie for letting me into this site in the first place. i always did want one of those, and that one looks damm good.

The spud is genuine Tortoise, it has unfortunately been eaten by beetle larvae.

This set is grossly overpriced, especially with one missing blade.

Crazy money but a really interesting and fantastic set!

If you look at the inside of the box where the blades sit you will notice the red felt is not faded where the missing blade was, this tells me it was lost not to long ago

he wanted $1299, but settled for &750. hope the buyer can come up with that other blade from somewhere...

i suppose that was a good price if you really wanted that incomplete set. it was still just too much for me.
