can you explain why this has happened. just last year this knife sold to members for $129.95
is michael pratter's name to blame? or the high cost? or both?

I'm just guessin' of course, cause I have no idea what is going through other folk's noggins.
Could be the 96% seller rating. For ebay that is a LOW rating. Also the seller has relatively few feedbacks - only around 46 IIRC.
The NKCA doesn't have the untarnished reputation it once had. I personally think it is getting better, but some folks just may not want anything to do with them.
One other thing: Some knives are like buying a car. Once you drive it off the lot, the value drops. That knife just came out last year. It may take 10-20 years before it becomes a "classic".

Just my opinion but it was an auction and strange things happen in an auction.A couple of cases in point:

The first has nothing to do with knives.At a charity auction in Chicago a couple of years ago we were auctioning off pieces of art work done by a group of pinstripers and sign painters at the Chicago World of Wheels.

There were several pieces that brought what I believed to be unrealistic prices and several others that were literally stolen.Why did this happen? Because it was an auction and ANYTHING can happen.

At a vintage car auction several years ago a couple of bidders got what is commonly known as "auction fever" whereby they lose all sense of reason. They were bidding on a 1957 Corvette that was fuel injected and in #1 condition.At the time this car would normally sell for $40,000-$60,000. Well these clowns got into a dick waving contest and ran the price of this car up to $241,000! Why? Because they could.

In both cases neither item sold for what the realistic value was.An auction is basically a crap shoot;if the conditions are right the seller can make a bundle,or he can get burned badly.

A lot of people believe that the time an auction ends has a great deal to do with how much the seller will realize and time their auctions accordingly.There may be some validity in this thought. I have seen regular auctions that floundered when they either ran too long or they sold off a lot of high dollar stuff first and people lost interest and walked away.

Sorry for the long rant but that is my thoughts on what may or may not have happened.

I've seen identical items sell at auction for $50.00 one day and $500.00 on another. It depends on who happens to be around.

It's not NOW. It's not HOT. It's not FRESH. It's not NEW.

That's my take.

If no one else is willing to say it, I am. It's butt ugly. I know a lot of y'all don't use looks as a criteria for your knife purchases but personally, I usually won't buy a knife that doesn't please my eye.

I've noticed that many NKCA knives don't sell for what the same non-NKCA knife would normally bring.
I think it may have something to do with the published number released.
Just a thought.
