What The Heck Is This?

I'm pretty sure it's not what I thought I was buying. I thought it was a British Army Knife but now I'm thinking it's more of a British Army Style Knife. Anyone ever heard of the Boat Brand tang stamp? Or maybe it's Goat Brand. It's so poorly stamped it puts me in the mind of Eastern European work. Where ever it came from, it's a big old pig. Looks like someones service number painted on the handle. Maybe someone trying to phony up a WWII BAK? One bad picture fooled me.

I don't know enough about the Brit WWII riggers knife to say if it's real or not. I did see one just like it with the painted numbers on the handle on Ebay this past week. Is this the same knife?

Looks like Boat Brand L.T.D.

I doubt if it is official, it would have some kind of acceptance marks stamped on it.

Holy cow Dimitri. I looked at that stamp 14 ways from Sunday and didn't get that out of it. By golly, I think you're right. Amazing what a fresh (and younger) pair of eyes can do.

The first thing I looked for, after being totally bummed by the tang stamp, was the MoD broad arrow acceptance mark. Not there of course. If that is indeed L.T.D. on the tang, it has a good chance of being made in the British Isles.

I know nothing about British service numbers but if that is genuine, the knife could have been a private purchase item. Maybe I should take my own advice and cart it over to BritishBlades and give the guys over there a look see.

A fella that goes by the handle of 'gew8805' over at BritishBlades nailed it. I hope he doesn't mind if I post his comments here.

"While IMA-USA doesn't quite accurately describe the origin of these knives (they say "these are the sturdy Clasp knives issued to all British infantrymen as part of their personal equipment") and that they are "British WW2 type Infantry Clasp Knife: Untouched Condition". The word "type" says quietly that they are not British military. These particular knives were imported from Nepal. Where they were actually manufactured is open to conjecture but it is certain that they were not made in Britain to British specifications."

The knife is at the following link and it's an exact match.
http://www.ima-usa.com/militaria/edged- ... ition.html

Duped. Hoodwinked. Out foxed. Bamboozeled. Ten bucks here. Twenty bucks there. Pretty soon they've taken all the money you had stuffed underneath your mattress.

The listing and description were very smart. - "Vary Heavy Duty Nurseryman Pocket Knife"
"Vary heavy duty Nurseryman Pocket knife for airating the roots and opening plastic and crokersack binding on plants, 6 1/2" long, with a 2 1/2" main blade !" wide and 1 1/4" thick."

You can't come back and say, "That's not a British Army Knife" because the seller will say, "I didn't say it was."

Oh, well. This isn't the first time I've outsmarted myself but beware ye the person whos name I draw in the next POS roundtable. BWAHAHAHA
