All About Pocket Knives

This is a very nice pattern of knife to carry. It is not quite as bulky as a scout/utility knife in the pocket yet it still has several blades to use.

Here are a couple old premium cattle knives

I thirst for education today, Dimitri. What makes this a Cattleman's Knife? To me it just looks like a Stockman with a "straight" or "cigar" frame and a potpourri of blades.

I'm still trying to figure out all these patterns so I don't embarrass myself more than I usually do.

I think these are all cattle knives. They came from UNION STOCK YARDS CHICAGO.

Those are beautiful knives, JACKNIFEBEN and Dimitri.

Here is a small 3" Schatt & Morgan stockman. I guess you could call it a "starter" cattle knife or a “calf” knife. Does anyone know if other companies made small stock knives?

Here is a Robeson 3 1/2" 632846 equal-end cattle knife......

followed by a 3 7/16" 632717 Eureka PocketEze cattle knife.

I think a "Cattle Knife" should have at least one of the following blades: A spey, a punch or a sheepfoot.

Here are two equal-end, double-ended two blade cattle knives. They both have a spey as the second blade.

First is a Terrier, 1910 - 1916, 3 1/2" 243633.......

followed by an unnumbered Terrier, 1910 - 1916, 3 1/4" .

These two Terriers are about as close to mint as a near one hundred year old knife can be.

And mine has neither. I think Charlie is right and my knife is an equal end jack. I will correct this as I do have a few real cattle knives. Sorry for the poor translation.

FRJ, I wasn't criticizing your knife. I was just setting up the two Terrier double-ended jacks or Bullheads, as cattle knives.

I thought I would post two pages from the 1903 Schatt & Morgan catalog showing their cattle and stockman knives. Page 34 indicates that their cattle knife has the same blade configuration and the Excelsior and was supplied in pearl also. There were two models of the stockman, premium and western. I have never seen the western pattern in real life. Check out that swedge grind on the western blades.

That is an interesting knife Paul. I was in on that auction. It's a beauty. I thought it was unique in that the nail nick on the big clip blade is on the back side. Great pick up, beautiful bone handles, and a nifty box too.

Hal, many of the 4 blade cattle pattern has the pull on the back side. To
me a left hand pull. I don't know if that is what they are called officially.


Stockman

Speaking about 4 bladed cattle knives, 42172 and 42179 CATTARAUGUS. Both have 3 back springs.

High Carbon Steel is a Camillus brand made for Sears and/or Montgomery-Ward per Price and Zalesky. Very nice knife, love that bone
