All About Pocket Knives

Oh boy -I've gone and done it....bought my first "pricey" knife. Most of my knives are Shrades or Kershaws edc's.....but I just couldn't resist on this one.

It's on its way and I can't wait for it to get here....

Good pick for your first. You may have seen others told after their first GEC, it's a slippery slope you're on now. Look out below!!

Haha -thanks Jerry. I just had to tell someone that would appreciate it....my wife will probably drop dead if she knew how much I paid. Although, my second choice would have been a Sabenza but cooler heads prevailed!

Oh boy, oh BOY!! It finally arrived in the mail today!! It's so beautiful...I want to carry it so badly but its so nice and shiny....numbered 21 of 25.

So here's my question for everyone -should I put this gem away or in my pocket (cause that's where I'm leaning)?

Any logic or thoughts would be appreciated...

I get more enjoyment from mine when I USE THEM!

That's what gets me with GEC. I buy one to use and then realize it's too pretty to use. I've been known to occasionaly buy duplicates of the same knife just for that reason.

Glad you like your new knife. Now go cut something and drop it into your pocket.

I have tried to buy 'non-serialized' GEC's for users, but thats just me.
Would be a great reason to grab a second GEC!!

Use it. Trust me that if you don't put it in your pocket, your GEC collection will grow 4 times as fast instead of only twice as fast I've gotten GECs to use, then thought that they were too nice, so I got a second, and then ended up with 4-20+ of a pattern*... Yeah. Definitely use it.

*I'm not complaining either

If you're asking for opinions, here's mine. If not just carry on, no harm no foul.

For me a knife is a tool. I've carried them, one at a time, for over sixty years and most of them for several or a lot of years without changing. That said, I accumulate knives (collectors have focus) because I've always liked them but until about 10-15 years ago I never gave a thought to owning more than one or two at a time.

I buy them because I like them, not to carry them. That's all tied up in a big ball with such things as:
I don't see a need to carry something other than what I've been carrying.
I don't know anyone outside this forum who gives a rip about what knife I'm carrying today.
A $60-$120 knife is a significant investment to me and I don't want to take the new off them by packing them around in my pocket full of stuff. That's what my EDC is for.
I don't buy them as an investment but neither do I want to devalue them by carrying them. My accumulation is not large enough and my pockets are not deep enough to do something like that on a whim.
I don't need an expensive pocket knife just to open boxes, cut string and scrape parts and never in my life have I wished I had more than one knife in my pocket or a knife other than the one I had on me.

This my opinion on the subject and I don't have a quarrel with, nor am I criticizing the guy who holds an opinion that's contrary to mine.

As for you, in my opinion, that's a personal decision. Do what you want to do and the hell with what anyone else thinks, including me. (Well, 'cept maybe for your wife. )

Addendum: I like those Wharncliffe Whittlers and I think you made a good choice for your first GEC. Someday down the road, I hope to be able to add one to my accumulation.

I've been a knife accumulator for around 30 years. I've carried a pocket knife, or one on a belt, or both, for about 50 years. While I have quite a few mint GEC knives, I also carry several different patterns. I don't think you can fully appreciate GEC products unless you use at least some of them. I always get a sense of personal pride and patriotism when I pull out my Northfield to cut some mundane object; sorta makes me happy just to use it. So I say... buy one to put up and one to use! Or, if you're like many of us, buy several to use and many more to admire and fondle! GEC makes the best production knife available, bar none! Their limited runs in a variety of patterns and handle materials keep even the most particular collector interested! JMHO

A beauty of a knife. Good advice about the carry option, too. I just wish I could take it--to buy some to carry and some to hoard.

I've got five GECs now and every one of them has ended up getting carried...some of them a lot!

Of course I don't have any of the really super deluxe stag knives--that might be a little tougher, but I suspect at some point even that would find its way into a pocket.

I'm glad I took a temperature on this one! I'm not a collector -definitely an accumulator. In fact, I think nearly every single knife (minus 1 or 2) that I own have been given to me over the years.

You can imagine not too many people gift a GEC (...yet) quality knife. Being my first quality knife, all shiny and new, I started to second guess my -what would otherwise be a no-brainer- instinct to put this baby in my pocket and love it to death.

I vote to carry it. I fully understand "keeping it pristine" as do most of the folks in this community, but I believe you'll get more enjoyment from it if you handle it and get to "know" it on a daily basis …

Just my .02 ….

Oh, and by the way, smart money has it that it won't be your only GEC for long …
