All About Pocket Knives

Hey guys...

I have a question...would appreciate some advice. Today I came into possession of two Schrade Old Timers, #60TCP-Golden Bear lockback
hunters, still in the "clamshell" plastic package with warrantee/guarantee
papers (whatever you call them) still in there. Unopened.

These are the large lockbacks with leather sheaths and Delrin handles.
SS blades, and, of course, they're USA Schrades. I don't need to consider either of them as "users". They're just nice to add to my collection.

I have a large display case...they'd look nice in there. But what do you think...should I keep them in the original packaging? I'm probably never gonna sell either of them, so I'm tempted to just remove them from the plastic, and place them in my display case. Would this be a mistake? A friend or two has advised against this. Thoughts? I'd appreciate some knowledgeable input.

Just my opinion,
What are your plans with them?
How would you enjoy them most?
If you plan on keeping them forever I would open them, if that is how you would enjoy them.
Plus look at the care aspect, even though they are in the package, they still could develop rust, and have other care needs.
Just my opinion!

I would take them out, Ren wax them and then put them in a display.
Store the boxes and paper work...... just in case you decide to sell or trade them. Thats what I would do...

I'd rather put them in my display case...but I wasn't sure. I hate to have any of my knives sitting in plastic cases...but I wasn't sure. They'd really look so much better in the display case. I'll take your collective advice...
keep the paperwork, and display them along with my other US Schrades.

I really appreciate the input. Good to have some "fall-back" opinions.

Why not take one out and put it in the display case and save the other for a rainy day. Clam packs are relatively new as far as knife collecting goes, and dispite the fact that most poeple hate them, we will not know what kind of value the pristine knives NICP may have 20-25 years from now. JMO Rick

I have three Schrade SP3Ss that I recently bought. (You can see two in another thread) One of those packages was breaking up.

Whoever said plastic doesn't naturally disintegrate has never done a real time test. I've bought lots of things in plastic clampacs that rotted. The item may be fine until the very end, but then the gasses from the plastic rotting will finally take their toll. I wouldn't save anything in a plastic clampac for any longer than you have to.

I'd rather put things in a nice case or use them then have them in plastic tombs. I kept the paper backing and the papers that came with the knife I already opened just in case I need them later for display.

So my 2 cents....take them out and save the materials you can.
