All About Pocket Knives

Someone listed these fourteen knives on Ebay earlier this week. I bookmarked the auction in order to see how they did.

Today, the auction had ended early without bids.

I suspect the seller might have gotten a really nice back-channel offer.

Here is how the seller described the knives:

This auction is for 14 older vintage pocket folding knives in various states. They range in size from 3” up to 5-1/4” closed. Most are in very good to excellent + condition. The marbles has pitting on folding safety & on 1 side of blade. Others include large whittler, ulster knife co. #3279, large banana lock back, case tested looks like #6151l, Remington 1613, texas toothpick with etching on blade, Winchester #1950 lock back, a near mint challenge cut co. lock back with folding guard & faint etch on blade, + new your knife Utica etc.

I think that big Ulster stag whittler is a fantastic knife.

Of course, they might all be fakes. What do I know about such knives?

Ebay no longer lists the start date, but I think it was Monday, the 3rd.

The seller ended it early,and cancelled all bids ??? but the last bid was for***** $2121.11

In the last photo above, what make is the trapper jack with the pen blade?

When I saw that lot I emailed the seller because I knew they would be inundated with offer$ to end the auction early. I asked for a shot at buying them if they decided to do that.

The seller later responded saying that they were ending it early unsold because the seller got nervous about selling them and decided not to sell. So I think no one got them.

Unbelievable lot though.

I'm a little confused on ebay's policy on this. Can a seller pull an item at any time during the selling period? Dosen't seem quite fair to me from a buyers point.

I know its annoying...but its done all the time.

Just think though, the practice opens up a whole 'nother collecting field: you can start collecting the lies (oops, sorry, I meant "explanations") from sellers as to why they ended the auctions early. It is an amusing--and no-cost!--hobby, and one I am trying to learn to enjoy. Everyone can have their favorites, and we can both trade them AND keep the ones we've traded! (not much of a market for them though)

Once in a while someone will admit they chose to break the rules on ebay, and sell off-list. While essentially stealing the services of ebay by using them for advertising then cheating them out of their percentage for the service, people who do this are generally described as "honest."

Cheating e-bay is akin to cheating the government. Is it really a crime to steal from a corrupt and greedy organization that doesn't provide the services you pay it for?

You have a choice about dealing with ebay; if you don't like the rules you can always take your business elsewhere, or try to get the policies changed.

I'm more of a pragmatist than an ebay defender. I sort of regard ebay as an extension of the old days when sellers mailed out actual lists of their offerings (I know, I can't believe we actually did that . . . ). You still have the same mix of honest sellers, liars, and crooks; but now you have at least some recourse when a seller lies about what you are buying . . . . (Other than a roadtrip of several hundred miles and the risk of arrest as you explain to the seller that he is going to take the knives back, and that his only choice is how he does so. But maybe it was just me who did things like that.)
