All About Pocket Knives

I'd like to know where I should buy knives for working on. I want good knives that can be used to make customs, and inexpensive knives that I can just butcher while practicing. Do you think better prices can be had on eBay, or should I wait for summer and hope I can find knives at lawn sales?

From what I remember the flea markets and local antique stores are pretty much the same. Poor quality small knives with no real value, but huge prices.

It would be nice not to have to rely on eBay, but if I can find what I need there, I guess I'll buy there.

Idea for you !!
Go to you pawnshops, let them know what your looking for. Learn to haggal and make a new friend.
Go to local auctions tell them too what you are looking for. Again make a NEW friend.

LOOKING like the best way is to MAKE FRIENDS.
Read a book on How to make new friends.

since you are in vermont (not my neck of the woods )check flea markets, yard sales, auctions, ect. Like just says, learn to haggle. Usually (around here) broken handles, rusted blade or a broken blade the value drops instantly. Practice on junkers first! I would if I could do over again, mistakes will be made, there is no getting around that!

YEAH, I was thinking of Rough Riders, even new ones. Even with shipping a batch would be cheaper than a pawn shop. They are in business to make money, so even Ebay will be cheaper. I think I will go to a few garage sales, that will SHOCK my wife. See what's out there around Santa Rosa.

I'm not sure where you live, but Vermont has no, that's NOpawn shops. They are illegal here. Who would have ever guessed that in a liberal, socialist mecca???

The closest things we have to pawn shops are second hand stores whose owners have to go around to yard sales, and auctions to buy up stuff and bring it into their stores to hike the price up, charge taxes, and ruin the value of anything cheap.

Now everyone here knows I'm too cheap to make friends. I'm just a crotchety 7 year Air Force Veteran who has a heart condition, and many other physical problems as well as three kids who drive me NuTz. You know, out of work, very little cash of my own. You know, the kind of guy just trying to make ends meet that you never see because he's too busy trying to keep his head above water to have any money to go anywhere.

Whenever I try to haggle, which is never unless someone else sets a price, I end up paying more than the starting price. You know me, I'm the guy who doesn't figure it out when the good looking girl asks him to fix her bed frame. So if I need to make friends, I'm doing my best, but I guess I'm just naturally screwed.

Oh yeah, you can't fool me, I've learned never to buy those Chinese knives...they'll never be worth anything. I'm buying all American now. I'll show you how I've reformed when I receive my last two purchases. Hint hint.

So, I guess I keep searching eBay until spring gets here.

that's right, the chinese knives won't ever be collectible. but i'm talking about puttin a hammer to em! inexpensive knives on ebay would work as well, but if they are that cheap, there is not much to work with.

Do a search for confiscated knives from the Airports, you can buy them by the pound. I think it is NTSA and TSA Confiscated, or just do a search for "confiscated knives" you should come up with quite a few results. You can get alot of knives to work on fairly cheap for the amount of knives you can get.

Rich (LT) is a great friend, and always likes a good trade. Figure out what you have to offer (it ain't always about the money), maybe some skill you have, and you'll work it out...

Ebay, it's the devil we all know, but junkers and "project" knives can be scored for next to nothing. Look for those "lot of knives" auctions. In a group of 5 or 6 junk knives, there might be a couple fix-er-uppers in there, and because they are junkers, you may be able to get a good price.

BTW, we have yard sales and pawn shops in NH. Come by for a visit. And if not, I probably have some junkers that I can send you if you get bored...

Speaking of TSA confiscated knives, there is a place in Concord NH that collects the TSA tools and knives and sells them - cheap!! I have never been there but I read about the place in the Boston Globe. I don't know exactly where in Concord it is (do you know Glenn?).

I'm in central Mass and I have in the past bought loads of junk knives at the big Brimfield outdoor antique show.

To begin with I'd like to thank everyone for the great ideas. I'll be checking them out when I get time. I'm watching some lots on eBay right now, but there's no logic as to why some are going way high and others for a song. Well, I'll get the hang of it.

I think this might be a thread that will help others in the future, so if anyone comes up with even more good ideas, keep bringing them here.
