All About Pocket Knives

I generally have a knife or several close at hand at my 'puter desk.

I mess with them a LOT. Picked up my Primble Barlow and opened the blade to check sharpness.
It wasn't up to my standards. Tried ceramic, then coarse ceramic then blade steel and couldn't get it where I wanted it.

I don't have a mouse pad, but do have a large selection of sandpaper.

320 wet or dry was needed to get it where I wanted.

It's carbon steel. Must have a heck of a heat treat! Should STAY sharp for a good while!

I can recall way back when the local hardware stocked John Primble knives along with Schrade and Case. I was mostly into Case back then (70s) but I do remember a lot of the local "experts" raved about the edge holding ability of their Primble knife.

Stainless is nice for the fancy collectibles that you know will never see any pocket time. When it comes to a working knife, the steel in those old John Primble's is about as good as it gets. I love my Case Knives and since I've been doing Kabar's folder repairs I've gained a lot of respect for their old carbon steel. Dad's old Primble Hawkbill that I treasure can still hold an edge with the best of them. With it being hard to sharpen, you can bet it will hold that edge for quite a while.

That old Buck 110 I have has one of the hardest damn blades of any knife I own. Buck didn't mess around back then. I still like carbon steel but that knife is an exception to my rule.

The 70`s Primble steel was darn good but the older Primble India Steel Works knives were better to my way of thinkin.
