All About Pocket Knives

While trolling through Ebay last night, I was actually looking for Benchmade knives when this caught my eye :

And then I read the description and had to have a good laugh :

I learned a long time ago to "never say never".

The first ceramic blade I saw was the one Boker introduced in the 1980s. The Boker sales rep. was in the store and I was ordering some stock. He showed me a flyer of their ceramic knife. I asked if he had a sample & he showed me his sample; a 6 inch slicing knife with the blade broken at the handle. He said they are so brittle it had gotten broken in its box, inside his sample case, just from being bumped around in his car and on airlines.

He did tell me Boker was working on improving them, but they were just the first generation and still had issues to overcome. He also said the blades would chip, but of course the edge won’t roll like a steel blade. He said if they chipped you could sent them back to Boker to be sharpened on a belt sander.

In the 25 years since I saw the first Boker ceramic the technology has apparently improved. A few years ago I saw that Boker had produced a ceramic blade lockback folder. That would be impressive. Lately I have been seeing ceramic knives from China, so the technology has seemingly gotten better.

I have a paring knife that I picked up at China City (Harbor Freight). It is very sharp and will slice a tomato so thin you can read through it. If you remember it's glass and handle it accordingly, I think it will last longer than you expect. A ceramic blade for a pocket knife? Nah. That's just crazy talk. First time you used it as a screwdriver or a pry bar, the blade would just snap right off.

I've never known any cutting device that NEVER needs sharpening ...... well, I guess if you didn't use the knife and just looked at it, hmmmm

I'd worry about dropping the darn thing ...... as far as pocket knives go, I think I'll stick with good old American steel QQQQ

Ya’ do know ya’ ain’t supposed to use ANY knife as a pry bar…unless it is designed for that.

Hmmmm, put plastic handles on it and a metal detector won't see it.

You could put pretty celluloid handles on it. If they ever gassed it would'nt hurt the blade.

I have a Boker ceramic knife. You can cut an apple and not get a metallic taste in your mouth!!!

Is that the reason the tip broke off my Buck 055 when I tried to pry the remains of a dowel pin from a hole in a chair leg? And here all this time, I thought it was a defective knife.

$129.99 for a knife with a glass blade?. Now THAT's crazy talk.

That whole glass blade on a knife is just a whole lot like, "Here, hold my beer and watch this." Didn't anyone field test this before they fired up the production lines?
